“A warm welcome after a long walk”
Reviewed April 28, 2012

We ate here after a long day walking and it was the perfect end to the day. The staff were friendly and provided excellent service. The ales brewed at the pub and were fantastic. The Cumberland sausage was very good and all of our group had a really enjoyable night.

The best Inn in the area by far, nothing was too much trouble and the food was perfect. We had a couple of nights there and have already booked to go back we loved it so much. The staff were super friendly and so much fun behind the bar - literally our favourite place to go in the Lakes now. Walking around there is just what you need, some easy, some more difficult. Can't fault the place for the money.

Our family visited the Woolpack on 12th April 2012 on the recommendation of our fell-walking son who has been several times previously, He and his mate set off up Scafell and we enjoyed a stunning walk along the banks of the River Esk in beautiful weather. We all met up for a great meal in the Bar. One of us had an "excellent calzone" (his words) and one had the great tasting local sirloin steak. Two of us got stuck into the enormous steak and kidney pies with proper chips - great fell-walkers' food. Nice friendly greetngs from the staff good beers and and warm comfortable relaxed atmosphere. We will come again next time we are up in the Lake District.

As a group we visited this pub a couple of times during a week staying in Boot. With the signs for Sky Sports outside we weren't expecting much. On walking in we were very warmly welcomed by the staff. The place has a good atmosphere and good beers on offer.
While the food wasn't of restaurant quality, it was great pub food. Wholesome, tasty and decent portions which is exactly what you need after a day out on the hills.
Thoroughly recommended.

You don't expect a palace when you are at an Inn that caters mainly for those who have gone for the outdoors , however, the first and remaining impression here is ' tired' needs a revamp. Work seems to be in progress with the bedrooms where these were of a good standard. A good and friendly welcome from all staff which continued throughout my stay. No complaints in the bar where there is a good small collection of real ales ,including their own from the on site Hardknott micro brewery. The main issue with this establishment is the quality of their food. Very disappointing but after a day on the fells, I just wanted to eat. The exception was that they provided home made chips.

My husband and I stayed at the Woolpack because we wanted to do a long walk and somewhere nearby to eat and sleep, the Woolpack is perfectly situated for footpaths onto the Eskdale fells, literally on the doorstep. We booked last minute in a busy period between Christmas and New Year and got a very reasonable deal. We returned from a six hour winter trek in sleet to be welcomed by the very friendly staff and warm cosy surroundings. The food was the basic pub stuff but absolutely fine, my steak was very well cooked to my liking, perfectly seasoned and portion sizes were generous (I am fussy about my steak and it was perfect) it would have only been improved if served with a side salad or some form of fresh green veg. We did order nachos nibbles to start off with and they came with the expected salsa and rather unexpected whipped cream!!!! The mulled cider was great and just what was needed. Staff were very friendly, warm and helpful. Breakfast was wonderful. Our room was very reasonably priced because it had a shared bathroom. The room was small, with a view of the back of the building and was not glamorous in any way. However, the bed was ultra-comfy; the bed linen was beautiful, crisp clean white cotton sheets. The room was basic but warm and comfy. One small downside of our room was that there was only one plug socket, and the hair drier wire was not long enough to reach the mirror and the kettle had to be placed on the floor to plug it in and you had to use lamps, or kettle or hairdryer one at a time. I'm sure if I had asked they would have given me an extension lead but it wasn’t too much of a problem for one night. The only problem I had was with the shared bathroom, which I am sure is not used very often as most rooms were en-suite. It was very old and tired looking. The loo was perfectly clean and useable but the room was frankly a bit dusty and dirty. I do think a shared bathroom needs to be kept ultra-clean and needs to be regularly checked. There was no mirror, so no way to check I didn’t have mascara all over my face before heading back down the corridor to my room! So even after our long walk I wasn't tempted into the bath. The large sink in the room was fine for having a good wash in. Over all I would stay again (although in an en-suite room), it was just what we needed, basic, reasonably priced, friendly, good food and perfect location. I would reccomend it to friends who I knew were looking for the same thing.

Room Tip: Go for ensuite, unless like us you are on a budget and not too fussy, probably fine for hardy walker...

We had our wedding in Boot in June 2011, with the reception at he Woolpack. We had a moderate size wedding party of 65, which was just right for the space we had available. What a fabulous job they have done with the renovations, for a comfortable, clean in the middle of nowhere venue.

In the long term planning and the immediate run up to the day the whole team were fantastic, helping us with accomodaton, cars, tractors, and local contacts. There was nothing that was too much trouble, costs were always clearly communicated and very reasonable, and on the day itself, they made the whole day about us. They bent over backwards to accommodate our needs, even as plans changed literally as the eveing unfolded. Harry and Paddington also spruced up a superb tractor and trailor to transport us from the station at Dalegarth, and gave us a very special, unique Woolpack gift which we will treasure - literally a part of the Woolpack which will be with us for the rest of our lives!

The wedding planning team were so good in helping us with ideas and translating our ideas into something that on the day turned out to be magical, from the food to the decor and the logistics of the reception.

The whole team could not have been more accomodating, and the food they put on was superb, with a hog roast. The vodka bar and the beer we had ordered in went down an absolute treat too, and we think we also helped them in finding a winner of a DJ!

Lastly, the honeymoon suite should be sampled by all. Even if it's only for a night, that bath has to be seen to be believed!

Looking forward to going back again and again to re-visit our special corner of the world.
