We were staying in Boot and decided to visit the mill after a trip on the steam railway. Well worth a visit and highly recommended.

“Excellent attraction”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

Though there are labels and pictures, this mill is still working. It's old and not done up as a museum, so has a fine atmosphere. It was fascinating, and it was great to poke around the place, including going up the steps to see how the water ran down to the wheels. Very cheap to go round and on the day we went in was on the 'honour system'!

“A stunning piece of history”

A beautifully kept peice of history. Amazing to see the mill in working order and all for just £1.50. Well worth a visit to see it in action and the excellent scenery.

The sound from the waterfall is incredible and can be heard all around at night. It is great for children to see this mill and how the waterfall was used industrially in bbc the past.

“Small, but unique and unforgettable”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

This historic water mill comprises a series of old buildings in a beautiful setting in the village of Boot, near the terminus of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. The mill is still in working order, with an ingenious system of timber machinery that is a very rare survival of its kind. Although the mill isn't large, the movement of the mechanism combined with the surge of the rushing mill stream outside conveys a real sense of power and purpose.

What makes the mill truly special is the care, enthusiasm and ingenuity in the way it is presented. Besides the mill machinery, the interiors are full of quirky exhibits and captions, and the miller is happy to discuss and explain anything you may see. The role of the mill in the life of the farming community is also illustrated.

The items for sale include samples of minerals and artefacts found locally and a fine display of Victorian glass bottles, as well as ice creams, cakes and biscuits. If you are bored by the standardized choices of the average gift shop, you may well find this a refreshing change.

To sum up: if you are travelling on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, try to allow enough time at the Dalegarth end for the short walk to Boot village to visit the mill. Boot also has two good pubs and a village shop, so there are other attractions there too.
