“Lovely cottage”
Reviewed October 8, 2017 for a stay in September 2017

Great find for a group of us climbing scarfell pike. We enjoyed a two night stay. 10 people in total. Ample space and equipment for us all. Nice log burner and logs provided for a cosy evening in after our climb.
Thank you Matthew for all your help before I booked...a bombardment of questions from myself!
Wished we'd been able to stay longer.

“Spacious cottage, steep approach road, dreadful problem with damp”

We spent a weekend with a group of friends at this cottage.
The cottage is quite remote and the approach road is very steep and the last 100m is very a rocky unsealed track so beware the bottom of your vehicle. Make sure you bring plenty of supplies as there are no easily accessible shops.
The cottage is spacious and the kitchen accommodates 10, as does the lounge. The kitchen is well equipped . The lounge has a wood burning stove and this gave a nice focal point - provision of a few more dry logs would have been good.
The bedrooms are reasonably spacious with decent beds and linen. The bathrooms are old fashioned but functional and the showers powerful, with a big hot water tank so no problem with 8 people all showering .
The cottage was very cold when we arrived as all the windows were open, but having closed them all and put the heating on, it warmed up quickly. I suspect the windows were open because the cottage obviously has a major problem with damp throughout. There is black mould growing on many internal walls both upstairs and downstairs. The walls and ceiling in the upstairs ensuite shower room were particularly mouldy with paint peeling off the walls. Rustic is OK, mouldly not so - I really don't think with this major issue the cottage can be described as 'luxury" - particularly as the prices charged would lead you to expect a lot more.
Although it is well equipped with TVs and wifi, we could not manage to get the main TV to function. Too many handsets and not enough clear instructions. Quite a lot of the light bulbs upstairs were not working.
There is no phone signal anywhere around, but the wifi signal in the cottage is good and a landline is provided for emergencies only.
If the damp problem were sorted this could be a really great holiday rental with great walking nearby, but in it's current state I really wouldn't recommend it.

This cottage is fantastic! It has everything you could possibly need and has plenty of room. There were 11 of us at the cottage and at no point did it feel small. Every person commented on how amazing the place was. Great location and the owners are more than happy to help. Would definitely recommend!

“Wonderful stay at Gilbank Cottage”
Reviewed May 9, 2017 for a stay in April 2017

Thank you for an amazing stay at Golbank cottage.

The cottage is wonderful so full of character and was equipped with everything we would need. It was perfect for 10 of us staying there and the walk to the local pub was definitely worth it.

Thank you from all of us

“Secluded and lovely”
Reviewed February 21, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

Stayed here with family for the weekend the cottage was in a lovely and secluded location. The rooms were clean and beds comfy and the kitchen was well equipped. Some great walks right on the doorstep and plenty of games etc for kids to play. Had a great time and would happily return.

We had a fantastic weekend at Gillbank Cottage. The house is lovely, with plenty of space for our large group. There is great access to some beautiful walks. There are also several good pubs/ restaurants nearby, which were busy, so book in advance! I would advise to take plenty of supplies as we had a bit of a trek to get some milk but the house being quite remote was one of the things we loved the most! I'm sure we'll be back in the future!
