“Lovely return visit”
Reviewed August 5, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

We've stayed in several of the properties at Bridge End over the last few years, and we've not been disappointed yet. Stanley Ghyll is probably the favourite, though it's hard to choose!

Bridge End is in a gorgeous location, with Whillan Beck nearby, and the Eskdale hills just beyond. There are excellent walks, both on the flat (relatively speaking) and in the hills, as well as on- and off-road bike rides; there were also people swimming in the river Esk, though usually I suspect it would be far too cold!

The cottage itself is gorgeous: luxuriously appointed, very well-equipped, comfortable, clean and sensitively converted from its original state as a barn. You can admire the views through the velux window and upstairs French windows. Having stayed in this cottage more than once, we can see that Greg obviously updates the properties and generally goes the extra mile to offer a wonderful self-catering cottage.

There are a couple of good pubs within walking distance, plus several more within a short drive, as well as attractions such as Muncaster Castle. The west coast is pretty accessible too, with some lovely sandy beaches. La'al Ratty miniature railway is ideal for a jaunt to Ravenglass and back too.

Moving onto negatives, we couldn't find a bottle opener (though there was a corkscrew) or rubber gloves, which would be welcome additions, but these are minor quibbles. The bathroom and bath are small, which isn't a problem, though potential visitors of a larger build might prefer to be aware of this before booking a stay. Likewise, there's not a great deal of parking space, so those with larger vehicles might be better off taking a smaller car (assuming they have a choice, of course ...).

All in all, I'd heartily recommend this property, and the neighbouring ones.

“Cute little cottage”
Reviewed June 28, 2013 for a stay in June 2013

We stayed in Stanley Ghyll cottage for one week in June.

Location: great location for walks (including Stanley Force falls) and pubs.
Cottage: was cosy and was a good use of space. It could perhaps have been a little bigger but only if I was being picky.
Garden: walled garden was lovely; a perfect way to relax after a long day walking. Kept the sun until about 1900 - which would have been great had it not have rained for most of the time we were there ;-)
Other: had an issue with someone parking right outside the cottage but this was soon rectified after an email to Greg (thanks Greg!)

All in all we had a wonderful break in Boot and would definitely recommend it to others looking for a quite retreat.

Greg and Bob were also great!

Management Response

Thank you for your review and those kind comments about Greg and Bob. We would love to have made the cottage a little bigger however the Lake District planning authorities would not allow this.

We are so sorry that another guest parked in front of your cottage, that was rather inconsiderate and we have improved our car parking information so we hope this does not happen again.

“Cute cottage in lovely location”
Reviewed January 19, 2013 for a stay in May 2012

My wife and I stayed just as spring was getting under-way in the Lakes and were blessed with good weather. Set in the tiny hamlet of Boot, the village boasts 2 pubs (one good with great food, the other perhaps less so), a small post office / shop and art gallery (though we never found that open). Being on the Western side of the Lakes, it was far from the coaches that kept to Windimere adding to the out-of-the-way charm.

This tiny cottage, converted from a small barn is separated from the other properties and faces the fields and hills above Eskdale so is very peaceful. Booking online was simple and queries I had were answered promptly by the owner (we were travelling from Holland). The cottage has everything one would need and the welcome pack of tea, coffee, biscuits, fresh milk, etc were most welcoming. The fittings in the cottage were in places a little run down: the sofa felt like a young child had used it for trampoline practice; a few drawers fell apart unless treated with plenty of respect and the shower could be temperamental. It's also worth mentioning the field mice that found their way into the cottage but to be fair, we townies aren't used to the wild!

It's not 5-star, though the price might make you think otherwise. But overall, a very pleasant place and a great base from which to explore the Lakes.

Stanley Ghyll Cottage is a 400 year old Grade II Listed barn conversion, it is graded 4 Star and has many home from home comforts including free WiFi, full Sky TV with all channels, and Ipod dock, without losing any of its original historic character and charm. Our prices are fully inclusive of all linen, towels, gas, electricity, VAT, cleaning and welcome tray - there are no hidden extras. Our staff are on hand at all times to help guests make the most of their stay, and ensure that any problems encountered are swiftly resolved. We buy new cushions on a regular basis and if we had been made aware that a drawer had needed fixing, our caretaker Bob would have been able to take care of this immediately.

We do our absolute best to keep mice out of the cottages and for the most part are successful. We can discreetly hide traps if guests let us know that mice have managed to get into the cottage. In the 9 months between these guests vsiting and posting a review, we have installed both a new boiler and a new shower fixing. The second pub in the village also has new managers and is now serving great food again.
