We arrived on a fine Bank Holiday weekend, only 2 other couples there. Found this odd as the rest of the area was heaving. Location is stunning - overlooking the lake to Catbells - but no maps available and guests had to ask us directions, as staff were charming but new, with no local knowledge. Breakfast mixed - avoid the scrambled eggs, which settle into a puddle on the plate. Poached eggs and porridge very good. Evening meals likewise unpredictable mixture of good and poor. Despite the friendly staff, I would not stay here again.

My wife and I stayed at the Leathes Head with 17 friends, and we filled 10 rooms (the last one remained vacant).
All the bedrooms and the public rooms were clean and comfortable, the food, prepared by chef David and his assistant, was uniformly excellent, and the young joint managers, Jamie and Jane could not have been more helpful. We all stayed for four nights, there was not a single complaint, and it was one long party. We will certainly stay there again, and several friends may also return

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet and comfortable, but sizes and outlook, and therefore prices, vary.

This was our 5th visit to the hotel and our experience gets better each time. We had a superior room with double aspect views across to Cat Bells and up to Keswick. The room was large, the bathroom had a fantastic separate rain shower and everything was very clean. The bed was very comfortable. All toiletry and refreshment items were replenished every day of our 6 night stay.
The evening menu was a choice of about 7 mains with a changing daily special as well as vegetarian options. Dessert choice was varied, sometimes a daily special was available. Service at table was to a very high standard, the waitress remembered individual preferences and was very attentive.
Breakfast was in a class of its own. Choice of 7 main breakfasts, with very generous portions, as well as cereals, fruit, yoghurt etc. Enough to keep you going all day long.
If you are a bird lover the hotel has several bird feeders which attract a wide range of small birds which can be seen from the dining room and some of the bedrooms.
A regular bus service runs up Borrowdale, bus stops are a 5-10 minute walk away and we used the bus to get us to the start of some of our walks - only moved the car 2 days.
The managers do a great job in making everything run smoothly and we were able to relax completely. We will return!

We were looking for a place to stay for a few days in the Lake District, somewhere not too big, decent location, clean with a good restaurant. We thought we had found it with Leathes.
The room was fine, lovely views, clean, modern bathroom, lovely towels. Just missing the small things, such as no paper hankies or bottled water. At this level, that is not acceptable.
However, in our opinion, the one area Leathes fell down on was the food. It claims to have an award winning chef (recently checked by the AA!) but we found the food very average, bland and sometimes tasteless. We ate each night (it was too far to go to Keswick) and chose across the range in an effort to find something decent - and failed. For example, whatever sweet you ordered, what came was the flavour of that particular sweet plonked at the bottom of a bowl with 2 scoops of ice-cream dropped on the top. We looked at other diners and they had the same puzzled look as we, it so much reminded us of Berni Inns circa 1975. Similarly the mains. Again, whatever you ordered, the meal was the same, they all had the same vegetables. Other than for the meat/fish there was no difference. If we had to rate it, It would be just short of "good pub grub" status. Breakfasts. I did okay, I had the "American" each day, which was excellent. My wife tried the cold meat/cheese board which arrived with a mountain of uneatable stale cheese. We guessed that they thought quantity would overcome quality (or they were trying to get rid of all their old stock in one go). The soft cheese (Brie) was rock hard, (not from the fridge), just ancient, as was the smoked cheese. She tried scrambled egg the next day, which unfortunately was "wet".
Overall. Someone has spent an awful lot of money on Leathes and has kitted it out very well but perhaps the kind of returns they are getting are not sufficient to maintain the quality that is required to match the prices they are charging.

My husband and I escaped for a fabulous relaxing week at the Leathes Head Hotel. A beautiful small high quality hotel in the Borrowdale Valley.

We stayed in the luxuriously appointed Spa Room. This has a large bedroom with a beautiful view, a dressing area and a large luxurious bathroom that includes a sizeable walk-in shower and a large whirlpool bath. Energetic days out walking in fabulous weather were followed by a relaxing soak in the illuminated whirlpool bath, next to the open window with views of Skiddaw. What more could you ask for?

There is a small garden where we had pre dinner drinks each evening and a conservatory where we took after dinner coffee. The chef, David Jackson, wowed us every day with consistently fabulous meals from a varied menu based on locally sourced high quality produce. The Cumbrian breakfasts were the best hotel breakfasts we have ever had.

The service is excellent. Jamie and Jane are doing a great job here, friendly and attentive to just the right degree and nothing is too much trouble. The other staff were great too, in particular Tim provided an excellent friendly service to us. There are lots of extra nice touches, the daily scrumptious biscuits in the room, the expresso maker, nibbles with drinks........I could go on. We look forward to visiting again!

Room Tip: The Spa Room provides a special luxury.

Looking for a different hotel In the Lakes, I came across Leathes Head. (Previous choice with which we had been very happy for several years was pricing itself out of the range for value!).
It is well situated in Borrowdale for a range of walks and is within walking distance of Grange and the Keswick bus service.
The room (number 10 ) was extremely well presented and clean. Being on the ground floor it would be suitable for people with limited mobility. The menu was not extensive but offered several choices augmented with a range of special dishes each night. Continental breakfast was on the limited side from a variety perspective but perhaps that is
because I am always looking for something better than my normal day-to-day fare when I am on holiday! Staff were without exception pleasant.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and I hope we can return soon.

Had a fabulous stay, hotel was located in a peaceful area just what we needed to relax. Hotel was great and the staff were friendly and very welcoming. Food was excellent. Highly recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Despite being on the ground floor view was still great.
