This August we spent our anniversary break at the Borrowdale and we had five days of luxury! The hotel has bags of "olde worlde" character and lakeland charm but is absolutely not stuck in the past. The rooms are modern, comfortable and spacious; the en-suite facilities are gorgeous, spotlessly clean and well stocked with thick white towels. The silver service in the dining room is second to none. Food was exceptionally well presented, delicious, varied and plentiful. Staff were polite, friendly and made every effort to make us feel welcomed. My only gripe was with the noise from the generator/kitchen fans, but that was easily overlooked and was likely specific to the location of our room. Great value for money and a real treat to come back to such a warm, clean, spacious room after a long day's walking.

I would just like to add that i stayed at this hotel with my wife and can thoroughly recommend this hotel. The staff were attentive without being pushy. The room and food a delight. I was apprehensive at first after reading other reviews but my own experience is nothing but enjoyable

The previous posters had it nailed when they mentioned Fawlty Towers and 'residential home for the elderly'! This was just so over priced. Threadbare carpets and service in dining room very poor. Stale biscuits which we had with cheese (which waiter could not even name for us when we asked what they were!) Truely awful experience. TOTALLY overpriced.

The location of this hotel is excellent, with views over Derwentwater, and down the dale towards Scafell Pike. Our room, a deluxe double, however struggled to get sight of this beautiful view. The room was comfortable with a massive bed and comfortable seating area, but decor was dull. The bathroom, however was bright and spotless. Throughout the rest of the hotel there wa a distinct need for redecoration to update the tired, dark and threadbare corridors. The dining room was stuck in the 1960's with more than just a hint of Fawlty Towers! Breakfast wasn't too bad, but the evening meal which was included in our 2 night discounted break, was nothing to write home about, and after the first night we didn't find ourselves looking foward to our next evening offering. This was a place full of little quirks such as fish knives for the prawn cocktail and is lumpy mash and cabbage really the ideal accompaniment for steak?
On the plus side, there was a very pleasant terrace on which we sat and shared a jug of Pimms and lemonade on a very hot Saturday in one of this country's most spectacular locations.

We have stayed at this hotel several times and feel it gets better and better. My husband is very disabled and we find the facilities in the disabled rooms are the best we have seen.
The food is of very high quality , the refurbished lounges are very comfortable and we find all members off staff courteous and helpful.
We shall definitely be staying there again in the future.

we stayed at the Borrowdale on our way back to Scotland from a stay in N Wales. The hotel enjoys a beautiful location and is a grand old building, close to Derwentwater with the hills as a backdrop. The hotel has undergone extensive renovations and our room was light and well fitted but with noisy plumbing and a poor sideview outlook (25) Main concern was the noisy compressor/electric motor which rattled on all night. The upstains public areas were pretty shabby with worn carpets and ancient decoration, our main gripe was with the Service and Food, from the aloof reception to indifferent meals service and an overprice poor quality dinner menu, with a dispute over what constitutes a 2 or 3 course dinner. Apparently the Sorbet/Miniscule Trout between starter and main course counts as a course and is charged at £6 each. We did write to the hotel with our grievances but surprise surprise no acknowledgement. One night, nearly £200, waste of money!

This was our first visit to the Borrowdale Hotel, as this was our honeymoon, the hotel was excellent for this occasion. My wife and I were looked after excellent by the management and staff. The Deluxe Four Poster room was wonderful with excellent facilities supplied.
The service in the bar area and restuarant were fabolous, may I say also the food for both our evening and breakfast meals were of a very high standard.
