“excellent stay”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

booked two rooms on Travelzoo deal for a Ruby wedding anniversary. Rate included 4 course dinner each night and breakfast. Rooms had superking size beds and plenty of room and appeared to be recently refurbished as were the public areas. Rooms both had view of the lake and were very quiet. Reception staff were friendly, polite and efficient.
The meals each night were superb and served in a very friendly way in a very timely fashion. Waiting staff were excellent. Breakfast was similarly enjoyed with excellent bacon and good quality tasty sausages.
A small problem with the bill was quickly rectified and the person committing the error appeared , to apologise in person.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel (we had prestige rooms) as we had a very pleasant stay despite some rainy weather in high quality rooms with all the other services all we could have wanted.

Room Tip: We had rooms on the front on the second floor which were very quiet (26/29)

Having booked a Travelzoo offer and reading other reviews I wasn't expecting such a wonderful experience. No corners had been cut, despite the more than reasonable price for a two night DBB break.
We enjoyed a roomy Prestige room with views of the lake. The staff, a good mix of British and European, were excellent throughout. Even the "grumpy" barman I'd read about proved to be quite entertaining.
The "extras" of tea and scones in the Conservatory on arrival, the wine tasting in the hotel's cave and coffee and chocolates in the lounges/bar after dinner ensured you made the best of all the hotels facilities. Unfortunately we didn't have time to use the leisure facilities in the nearby sister hotel .
I was aware that a number of guests had dogs with them but, as I'm not a dog lover, I can happily say I never heard or saw a dog other than in the hotel grounds.
It was obvious talking to other guests that a number of them return again and again and I can certainly see why. I'm sure it won't be long before we're back.

Room Tip: I would certainly ask for a room at the front of the hotel as there is little road noise - we slept...

Found a great deal on TravelZoo which included 2 nights stay, breakfast and 4 course silver service dinner on both days, which also included coffee and chocolates after the meal. The deal also included wine tasting, and tea and scones on arrival. Unfortunately the wine tasting wasn't on but we were given a complimentary glass of wine to make up for this. All of the food was excellent. Great portions. Staff are very helpful. I'm a vegetarian and I always had plenty of choice. We upgraded at an extra cost to a Prestige room, however the price difference was more than reasonable, and the room was great. We had enough space, a great bath, and a lovely view. When booking, and when changing the booking staff were always incredibly helpful. I cannot find any fault with this establishment. Staff were helpful when discussing the local area, and in particular the Keswick launch. The hotel itself is in a fabulous location. We chose to walk to one of the launch pick up points, which was an easy walk, and then take the boat into Keswick. We would have loved to have stayed longer, and will hopefully return again in the future.

Room Tip: I would suggest paying for an upgrade if possible, we stayed in a Prestige room. It was more than bi...

We booked a Dinner Bed and Breakfast deal for 6 members of our family at the weekend, as my Brother and his wife are here from Australia and both of them celebrade a Birthday while here. We all had a great weekend the hotel is staffed by really friendly people, the sommelier was very knowledgable and gave us a really informatative and enjoyable wine tasting. The rooms and food were really nice as well.

Room Tip: Higher room numbers seem to be better

We stopped here for two nights on a deal which included full English breakfast and a 4 course evening meal on both nights and cream tea. There were 4 of us altogether, 2 in 2 rooms and myself and my better half in a 1 room, all 3 rooms were standard rooms and although the rooms were big enough for single occupancy they were a little on the small side for a couple. However, the room were well equipped and clean. Food was very good at breakfast and evening meal with plenty of choice. Service was also very good except for a 20 minute wait to take our breakfast order on the Monday morning, although they were very busy with a lot of quests that morning. Location was very good for lots of walks as soon as you step outside the hotel so no need to have to get into the car to find some. It's about 2 - 3 miles to Keswick so not too far to a main town but as we had dinner at the hotel meant we could all have a drink. All the staff were friendly and professional

Room Tip: If you are a couple as for a room with a king size bed instead of a double.

We booked this on a special deal which included dinner in the price, the food was superb and the service excellent. The room was on the small side but was perfectly adequate with flat screen TV and a small but nice bathroom. The staff are mostly Romanian but are friendly and efficient, if we were staying and having to pay extra for dinner we would probably eat out as the 4 course dinner was a little on the pricey side (£31) but as it was in with our price we obviously ate there. The bar was comfortable and cosy and the bar prices were reasonable and wines available from around £18 a bottle, one downside is the mobile phone reception is non existent in the hotel but there is free wi-fi in all the rooms.

We have been going to this hotel on and off for nearly 30 years and have seen the changes over this time.
Yes some rooms can be small and we have accepted that but this time we had a nice classic room (7) and it was modern, convenient and the bathroom had a shower and bath.
The weather was cold but sunny and we managed to walk around Derwent Water (approx 10 miles) and also took in Lodore Falls and the route to Watendlath.
The evening meal was excellent on both nights and the staff were well trained and attentive.
Good choice of food with a silver service carvey at table as one of the main course choices each evening.
Breakfast was part buffet and a served cooked course. Plenty of tea and toast which set you up for the whole day.
The conservatory provides an ideal spot for reading or resting and also for a pre-meal drink.

So all in all great value (Travelzoo) and really good service and staff who will do anything possible to improve your stay.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a classic or prestige if possible.
