My friend and I had 3 lovely days at the Borrowdale Mid February on a special deal. It was splendid value - as the food is 1st class served in a bright and impressive dining room. I have to say the guests are of a older generation so it appears quite. We took two dogs with us and the room allocated was fine and spotlessly clean and the dogs very well accepted, but restricted to areas in the hotel as is normal.. As our room 26 was on the 2nd floor (NO LIFT) the water pressure in the shower was non existent - the worst shower I have ever had. The staff are helpful and willing to please but really should have made more effort to help us carry our bags to our room...two floors up with long deep stairs and fire doors to open on the way. I have stayed here twice now and will continue to look for the offers as its a great hotel and place to stay relax and eat very well.

Room Tip: as for lake facing and on the first floor...those stairs with bags and after a long day out on the fells. Less to climb when heading back to bed from the restaurant and the bar when fat and full

Lovely room first floor at front of hotel - no complaints. Dining area pleasant apart from the one dead flower on table for 3 days. Food bland mediocre quality expected better as stayed there on two other occasions. Need a new chef and motivate the surly barman. Not going back soon.

Room Tip: Ask for free upgrade

My wife and I spent 2 nights at the Borrowdale Hotel on a dinner bed & breakfast basis staying in a Classic double room. The service was very good throughout the hotel, the public rooms were spacious and inviting, and the bedroom/bathroom very clean and comfortable. The 5 course dinner was excellent on both nights and the full English breakfast was scrumptious!

We had one maintenance problem during our stay which was fixed within an hour.

Highly recommended.

Rooms very nice - no problems there. It's the public areas & food that just don't live up to the billing. Issues for me:
If a place advertises open fires, you expect that. We got a flame gas fire in the bar and a fire in a lounge that was set, but remained unlit all wkend. This was early Feb & it was cold enough outdoors. Why was that?
When a newspaper has been ordered, why leave these on reception to be picked up rather than left at the bedroom door, allowing guests to nip out & get it before getting fully dressed and out for breakfast?
The dining room is clean and well appointed, but the bright lighting and fact that you're allocated a table for the stay , and you stay there for the duration, means it has the atmosphere of an upmarket canteen. Why not let people choose??? If you get a badly placed table, why would anyone want to keep being directed there? The vegetarian dish on one night was without doubt from a packet or a mass catering supplier. This was cannelloni & not complicated. To be served a sorbet to refresh the palate & then be served packet food - who could be anything other than let down? We have several local pubs who do 3 courses for £12.50 which provide better quality food than this. The silver service promise belies the quality of the experience you get. Evening meals a real let down & nowhere near £30 a head quality.

These things in isolation are forgivable, but in total, they spoil things and don't make guests feel like things are done with them principally in mind. Things just need a bit more thought.

Why didn't I raise these at the time? Frankly I didn't want to have a difficult conversation on my wedding anniversary wkend, especially when there was no real correction that could be made for us and our experience.
Hopefully mgmt will have a think about some of these points for the benefit of others, because we won't be back.

A lovely hotel, friendly staff and a nice relaxed atmosphere will definately visit again.

We stayed over the christmas break, the hotel was tastefully decorated with a lovely christmassy feel, the hotel is old fashioned but in a good way.

The room was very comfortable and clean, we were at the back of the hotel so only had a slight view of the lake.

We had a four course meal in the formal dining room, which is to silver service standard, the food was very good, it also has a large wine list.

Breakfast was excellent also with a wide variety from cooked to continental.

We attended the wine tasting evening which was very enjoyable and informative.

Plenty of walks on the door stop or a 5 minute drive into keswick, dogs are also catered for.
