“Great Hotel”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

The Borrowdale Hotel.

A traditional Hotel that retains ‘old world’ charm from the roaring log fires in the various lounges to the ‘silver service’ in the dining room.

Great staff, fantastic food, and great location we will definitely return.

If you require leisure facilities the Lodors Hotel next door can be used.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 52 a premier room facing the hillside. Very quiet, warm and spacious.

Stayed 3, 4, January 2013. I have stayed before in 2 other hotels owned by the same group and they were both very good.
The Borrowdale was refurbished following floods last year and is clean and comfortable, Every room is warm and 2 with traditional open fires.
The bar is nice and there is a selection of Real Ales, They also serve bar meals if you do not want to eat in the Restaurant. The food is fresh and first class but rather expensive (£30.90 per/ person)
The bedrooms are spacious and clean, all have a bath and shower. Bath robes are provided, soap and shampoo, hair drier, trouser press, tea and coffee etc.
The beds are fairly comfortable but rather hard and rooms are serviced daily.
The mainly Romanian staff are very polite, friendly and helpfull.
One of the most beautiful areas of the lakes, I would stay here again or at their other Hotel (Lodore Falls ) whihch is about i mile away towards Keswick.

Room Tip: All rooms are very good

Been to the Borrowdale on 4 occasions now, partly because we love the area but the hotel has a nice ambience in fitting with its surroundings. Our room, at the front this time, was excellent, warm comfortable and had a hint of luxury. We did a three night say for the price of two which was good value. Staff were friendly, open and attentive, My only gripe is the evening meal is not quite as good as it was two years ago, feels like some cost cutting around the edges.

This weekend trip was booked as a gift for a special birthday and comprised of 2 nights bed, breakfast and dinner in a deluxe room. The hotel is a traditional Lakes hotel close to Keswick. Our room was large, spacious and well furnished with a comfortable bed. Staff in the dining room were friendly and welcoming. There was a good choice of food which was well cooked and beautifully presented.
The hotel is well located for good walks and clearly attracts a lot of repeat customers. Thoroughly enjoyable break and would stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake facing room

Just returned from a weekend break at the Borrowdale for a pre Christmas break. The location is perfect, just beside the lake and the Christmas decorations were magical. Our room was large, though there was no real view. The quality of fittings was first class. Food provided an excellent choice and the quality was very good. All of the staff were friendly and always ready to help. We would certainly recommend this hotel and shall be returning as soon as possible.

Having not been for a year or two and wanting somewhere to aim for to treat ourselves to a winter drive out on a day off we rang ahead to check they still allowed dogs in the bar/conservatory area (it being too cold to sit outside for afternoon tea like we used to enjoy). Arriving too early for lunch we partook of nicely freshly made coffee whilst we perused the bar menus. The service was friendly and polite and we enjoyed being the only visitors in the bar so got very personal but not over bearing service. The staff were pleasantly flexible on our mix and match requests from the menu (my wife being a very light eater only wanted a starter and desert - perhaps as we were the only customers eating.
The food was nicely prepared and presented. Just the alcoholic drinks (beer) were on the expensive side for us at £3.40 to £3.80 a pint, a £1 a pint more than I would normally pay. Our small well behaved dog fell comfortably asleep and we relaxed in the mellow (some would say old-fashioned but that's how we like it - no duke boxes or piped music etc.) surroundings. Will definitely return another lunch time.

Room Tip: We didn't inspect the bedrooms, but the residents' drawing room looked snug and comfortable...

Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this completely refurbished 4 Star hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Warm and welcoming fires in the Winter and cool drinks and Lakeland cream teas on the lawns in the Summer served with a smile. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The restaurant has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very elegant and comfortable. It also now boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 40 cosy bedrooms have all been refurbished within the last 3 years all have TV, telephone and hospitality tray. There are also 2 extra large, easy-access rooms too. If you are arriving or leaving on a Sunday make sure not to miss the famous Sunday lunch - it is well worth trying, but remember to book your table well in advance, as it is particular popular with both locals and residents.
