“Fabulous Christmas Break”
Reviewed December 30, 2008

Lodore Falls Hotel, Derwentwater

Just returned from a 3 night Christmas Break with my wife and daughter. We didn't know what to expect, but we all were very pleasantly surprised with the facilities, recently refurbished accommodation, organisation of events, and especially the standard of food. Although the hotel was full, the staff could not have been more efficient and friendly, helping to create a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere.
On arrival we were told by a fellow guest who had been on several previous Christmas events, that the food was exceptional. This was confirmed when sat down to a six course Christmas Eve dinner. The Boxing day buffet was displayed as a work of art, and tasted unbelievable. Although the meals were long and unhurried, it was possible to enjoy high quality food without being over filled.
A variety of events were organised including a guided walk, lake cruise, quiz night, dancing and a talk by a local photographer.
If it was preferred, individual free time could be used to explore the local town of Keswick or for the more energetic could walk any number of surrounding fells.
Hotel is rated as 3 star - should definitely be upgraded.
Prior to arrival we were in need of a break, and were extremely satisfied with our choice of hotel.

Just stayed at the Lodore Falls with my wife and youngest son for a 3 night Christmas Break. We had a fantastic time, the best break we've ever had. The quality, choice and quantity of food was amazing. The public rooms were pleasant and the Christmas decorations inside and out were brilliant. The staff were, without exception, polite, friendly and efficient. The activities included in the break were well organised and great fun. We booked the Penthouse (aka Borrowdale) Suite which had 2 bedrooms and a separate living room. It was spacious, well decorated and had a fantastic view of the lake from the balcony. The extra surprises such as a bottle of bubbly and chocolates in the room on arrival and presents which appeared in our room on Christmas Eve while we were at dinner etc were really nice touches. Obviously a lot of the above is only relevant to the Christmas break and it was expensive, but we'll definitely be returning in the summer, as I'm sure that we'll still enjoy the hotel and its location. I've never written a hotel review before, but I felt so strongly about our experience that I wanted to recommend the hotel as somewhere to try for a special experience.

  • Liked — Location, food, staff, accomodation, efficiency, exceeding expectations
  • Disliked — Old rattly lift - although it was a novelty!

The girlfriend and I stayed at this hotel for one night during our trip to Keswick back in February '08 as part of a Valentine's gift for her. I booked a Fell View room along with a suprise 'Valentine's gift set' which included flowers along with a personal message, a bottle of champagne and a variety box of chocolates - How cute!

We arrived at the hotel around 3pm to be told were told "the room isn't ready yet" so we went for a drive and short walk around Keswick then came back to the hotel 5pm-ish. Eventually got checked-in with no problems. We requested breakfast for the next morning at 9.45am which was the latest time possible - abit on the early side for a Sunday morning! Our bags were taken up to the room and after check-in was all done we shortly followed.

Arrived in the room and there were our bags and gift set for the girlfriend. She was delighted, however the flowers were much smaller than expected and my personal message that I requested to be attached to them was missing which I was disappointed about.

Both the bedroom and bathroom were overall very nice, tidy and everything was modern. We didn't have the best of views - Only half of a mountain and we looked out on to another couple of rooms which were below us. Later in the evening we went for a few drinks at the bar - All was okay and pleasant staff. The bed was a good size and very comfortable.

The next morning breakfast arrived up to the room bang-on time. Food tasted great (sausage, bacon and beans) and all were freshly cooked.

Checked out with no problems. At the time I was even tempted to check availability stay another night had I not had work the next day! Overall we both enjoyed our stay, had no real issues and would go back to the hotel!

  • Liked — The room (very cosy) and also the location (next door to the town).
  • Disliked — Nothing major.

On the whole the Lodore Falls is a very good hotel:Our fell view room was newly refurbished with a flat screen t.v and floor length curtains. The small bathroom was spotlesly clean.Bottled water is not provided in rooms.
The highpoint of our stay was the food.It was tasty and well presented and well above what i was expecting of a 3 star hotel. The desserts were particularly good. Also, considering the dinning room was full,it was the speed of service that impressed me-No waiting about for ever wondering where the main course is.All the waiting on staff are Eastern European. This turned out to be a bonus as they were all charming and very efficient.
Also the breakfast is wonderfull ,all you could ever want!. Infact the breakfast selection is better than some/most 5 star hotels ive stayed in both in the uk and abroad.
There are a few down sides.-The main car park is across the road and does not have video surveillance-This neads fixing ASAP.The hotel entrance is only 20 feet from the road--where have the 40 acres of land gone to?But most annoying was the flouting of the 'no jeans at dinner' rule by certain characters!
I wish the Maitre'D had the balls to bar them ,or at least to sit them in the naughty corner etc. Also the Bar Staff should approach seated guests and enquire as to their drink requirements.Guests should NOT have to to go to the bar and order drinks like some city centre slop house! Not for these prices the shouln't!. So bar staff retraining urgently required!
Apart from this the hotel is very good ,in a great location for walking and we will return soon!

Booking is a bit trying, since there is no answer immediately, and it took 2 'phone calls before I received a booking confirmation and credit card copy of the deduction of a deposit by post 5 days later. Likewise, checking in is time consuming and there is only a small counter for this. There is also only 1 tiny lift for the whole hotel to use. Car parking is across the road near some outbuildings. The launch to Keswick is about 10 mins walk, and very convenient.

We booked a superior room with view of Derwentwater which was excellent, although the room was small for the price, and jammed with furniture, which we had to move around before going to bed to avoid collisions in the night.

The restaurant is efficiently run, but 4 nights is enough as the food style at dinner is a little near the 1960's. The staff are delightful, and really helpful. The bar is not pleasant, and in contrast the staff are quite surly and parsimonious.

Other services, such as laundry are 7-day/week, very efficient and very reasonably priced. Check out could be horrible, with long queues and some irritation, and errors on the bill, so check it carefully.

We have just returned from a wonderful weekend at the Lodore Falls Hotel where we celebrated our wedding reception.

I cannot begin to emphasise strongly enough the quality of this hotel in terms of its hospitality, professionalism from the staff, room standards, views and service.

We booked our wedding reception over 12 months ago and have been vsisiting the Lodore every month since. On every occasion the staff have not been able to do enough for you, whatever you ask for they are only to pleased to oblidge, it a friendly and professional manner.

The Lodore is a stunning hotel set opposite lake derwent waters. The views from the lounge and restaurant are staggering and there are stunning gardens that are set out with tables and chairs for you to enjoy the scenary and food available.

Our room was a suite and offered stunning views of the lake however, all rooms regardless of view are stunning in decor, decorated to a very high standard with excellent amenitites and lovely toiletries!

The staff welcome you on reception and any issues that may arise are dealt with immediately and at any given time during the hotel there are several managers available: We cannot parise the customer service and attention to detail enough!

The food is perhaps the highlight of the stay! The restaurant is stunning and exceptionally managed by Hans: who is a great, warm and accomadating character, nothing is too much trouble! We ate on the Saturday night and all 30 guests were blown away by the standard and presenattion of the food not to mention the service. Following this on the wedding day we catered for 100 guests and the food was equally good, again all guests commenting.

The falls are in the grounds and a beautiful there are also many spa and leisure facilities such as the heated outdoor and indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, gym and squash courts. There is also water activities available on the lake, less than 5 minutes walk and you could follow this with a pamper in the spa.

What an amazing venue this was, they made our day and stay so special and we can't wait to return soon.

The only negative thing about our stay was that we had to leave!

Thank-you to all at the Lodore
