“Lodore Falls - New Year”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

My wife and i have just returned from Lodore falls having had an extremely comfortable New Year spent with fellow guests and the excellant Lodore staff. Everybody connected to the hotel made us extremely welcome and no request was too much trouble.

The food for the New Years Eve Gala Dinner was excellant and the Beef Wellington a triumph, however the meal was slightly ruined for us by a large party nearby who didn't know how to behave when presented with party poppers, balloons and blower whistles. It would have been nice if the management had stepped in and asked them to tone it down a bit!

Our room was superb, with even under floor heating in the bathroom and plenty of space.
The New Years Day walk was a challenge and well organised with the mulled wine and mince pies half way round extremely welcome.

This is a beautiful, unspoilt part of the Lake District and the Lodore Falls provides some good old fashioned luxury. Not cheap, but the good things in life aren't!!

A New Year break at this splendid four star hotel. The facilities, the food, the accommodation and the overall experience was fantastic. I would highly recommend this hotel to anybody looking for a bit of a luxurious break.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms that overlook the lake and the fells beyond, the higher the floor the better the vi...

We have just returned from a superb New Year break. We booked early in 2012 and as we were a large group, were offered a good deal for a fourth night (B&B). Some of the group were returning customers whilst others experienced the Lodore for the first time. I can say without doubt that it was the best way to spend New Year. If anyone has any doubt that going away for New Year will remove the personal touch should think again. From the moment we arrived, to the minute we left we felt part of the Lodore 'family'. All the staff were polite, professional and never too busy to help. The hotel is very traditional but manages to offer something for all age groups and tastes. Considering the several hundred guests all had very high expectations, the staff managed to ensure everyone and every group enjoyed the holiday in their own way - even the more demanding customers. The standard of the food was simply outstanding and the Head Chef deserves special mention for his efforts. The Gala Buffet, in particular, is an experience that should be experienced by everyone.

To show complete objectivity, the only minor criticism would be that the background music piped through the hotel during the festive period was very limited - and what felt like a single CD on repeat, and even my own elderly mother could recite the words of Michael Buble and Rod Stewart tracks by the end. It was actually quite funny and made for conversation during the evening meals - although never distracted from the simply outstanding food.

Room Tip: All rooms are of a high standard, although we did find the central heating very sensitive, with the...

We came here for a wedding for 2 nights. Food was lovely and so was the decor. Family room was adequate but nothing special for the cost. Breakfast great and service very good although you sometimes felt rushed and staff eager to take your plates. The wedding service was excellent. Our only problem, and this became a big problem, was the cost of our room. It seemed to have increased by a large amount on our arrival from that we had agreed over the phone. After a full hour of heated discussions with the management team we came to an agreement but we were not impressed so say the least. We later found out that 3 other guests were charged a lot more than had been agreed at time of booking. Our advice - get your room rate in writing then there can be no quibble.

Your rate was confirmed to you by e mail on 6th June 2012, a fact you agreed when we showed you our log confirming that the mail had been delivered. So you did in fact receive written confirmation of your rate, it does quite astound me that you should put a review to the contrary on this site.

Kind regards

There was a deal at the time which was near enough 50% off. The place was decorated well for Xmas but the staff were exceptional in that nothing was to much trouble. We had dinner both nights and again was excellent. The wife is very hard to please but her comments were - 'fabulous few days and highly recommended'. 11 of us stayed at the hotel and all enjoyed it. The whole area including Keswick was excellent.

Room Tip: We upgraded to a lake view but strangely enough there was no radiator etc in the en suite. A bit col...

Food is excellent ( the busier the restaurant the slower the service, though at worst its still good).
Room excellent (camp beds for kids just adequate).
The staff throughout are excellent, from the room maids, to the reception, bar and waitng staff, all were fantastic, courteous friendly helpful.
Location: is there a better one?
2nd visit, would recommend and will be back
One problem area and that is caused by a lack of supervision in the pool area. There was never anyone there to book the hot tub, which means you traipse back to reception , to traipse back to the pool area to fill in the sheet. This also means the behaviour of large family parties goes unchecked, rows of Lagers by the poolside, uncontrolled kids causing havoc, people who have obviously never used a Sauna before not realising you shut the door when you go in or out, yes the towel that someone just put down looks like yours because they are all the same design, if you didn't put it there its not yours is it?! (for the 3rd time in 20 minutes) and no, not everyone wants or needs to know that you want to go to the toilet and what for!
Enforce the same atmosphere in the pool area as exists throughout the rest of the hotel and you cannot fault the place

Have stayed here several times for holiday and business trips over the years (you can make Preston after breakfast for 0930, and get back for dinner in the evening after work!).

Arrived at the time of the floods after a difficult trip up the M-6 from the SW at night, driving past swamped cars on the lake road in the total rainswept darkness, and in the midst of this eternal night, the Lodore Falls Hotel appeared brightly lit beckoning the weary (and concerned) traveller! (I stopped to take a photo!).

This hotel is an elegant Victorian construction, wisely constructed on a granite plinth, above the level of 10,000 year floods (the falls behind the hotel had flooded and a torrent had eroded the, front drive (dry by my arrival); the car park across the road was ten feet deep under Derwentwater), but the hotel and its accessible front parking had risen above all of this!.

The construction is attractive and is reminiscent of a cross between Swiss Chalet with a northern/scottish influence designed to provide the traveller with every comfort in challenging weathers. (We long to try a family X-mas here! (In the snow!).

The entrance hall is elegant and welcoming, a very attractive bar to the left and a dining room with an accomplished cuisine for dinner and a very elegantly presented breakfast to the right.

Lounges are elegant, warm and comfortable with a log fire.

Service is kind and helpful and is of a high standard.

Rooms are elegantly furnished and the most treasured are the lake views on the upper floors!

To awaken with a view of a snow capped Skiddaw reflected in the lake is an inspiring vision to carry you through the most challenging of working days!

Room service is good and to a high standard.

The indoor pool is of a good size and the outside jacuzzi is situated close to the ghyll at the rear of the hotel.

Someone smoked in their room while we were there, and a fire alarm at night was coped with, with impressive efficiency by the Maitre D'! (Entire hotel in the (dry summer) car park in their "jim jams"!)

The location of the hotel is to die for!

Derwentwater is in the unspoiled, uncommercialised and most beautiful part of the lakes, but yet is not as remote as eg Wast Water or Ullswater.

Keswick is a thriving gem of an eclectic town, with art galleries (I missed the last of a limited edition!), and something for everyone!

The hotel is on a flat path around the lake linked by steamer pick up points (based on Keswick) (one close to the hotel) and has the potential to make a very attractive and pleasant moderate walk for those who cannot attempt the hills.

For those with kids, or of a moderate level of fitness Catbells and a variety of other achieveable climbs either ring, or are close to the lake. (The falls behind the hotel are only a few minutes walk and are spectacular, especially when in spate!)

For the adventurous Borrowdale awaits (catch the 1600 tropical downpour in summer! 120 inches per year!) and the long route to Scafell Pike (a la Bradders!) only for the most fit and well prepared!).

Car trips make most of the other Lakes' areas accessible, and: Buttermere, Hard Knot pass, Kirkstone pass (Rest and be Thankful), Ullswater and the rest of the lakes also beckon!

A longer journey is Wastwater, but is very well worth the trip due to the grandeur of its views and its remote peace.

The lake and the views to Great Gable and the screes surrounding the lake are impressive (there is a scree walk round the lake).

The Wasdale head is a good pub, serving food and a mountain equipment shop is located nearby.

For those of a medium fitness (and good level of preparedness and mountain skills) the route up Scafell Pike via Lingmell Ghyll is an epic!

If you can't make it up the Pike, then Google it and the recorded epics of others can be enjoyed (eg on X-Mas day!)

When we were staying an Osprey nest was active in the lake area, and a public viewing hide available, so keep an eye out for this!

A great hotel in a beautiful location!

Room Tip: Lakeside view rooms and suites on the upper floors are the best!
