“Lovely hotel with amazing food and attentive staff”
Reviewed September 11, 2011

We booked this 2 night trip away through Travelzoo, but unfortunately the standard offer had been snapped up and we had to pay an extra £15 a night for an upgrade.....well worth it! the room was beautiful with excellent quality fixtures, fittings and towels. We had our first night's dinner included in the offer and it was the best food ever, so much so we decided to eat there again on the second night. Breakfasts were freshly cooked with plenty of choice for hot and cold food. We could not fault the staff, always pleasant and attentive, a credit to this hotel. It was very warm in the room on the second night - but the first night had been fine and the weather hadn't changed that much so may need to look at the heating settings as it did interrupt our sleep a bit. But all in all a fantastic hotel, gorgeous food and great staff, we will return!

Really enjoyed a short break at this hotel. It was everything I like - easy going atmosphere, comfortable, always somewhere quiet and pleasant to sit, indoor and outdoor pools, great scenery, food and excellent staff who actually knew what they were doing.

This hotel seems to run very smoothly, the decor of the rooms recently refurbished, lake views great and really appreciated the two armchairs and table in the picture window of our lake view room. No matter what the weather, there was plenty to do in the hotel. During our visit the weather was terrible and it was a treat just to sit by the fire and read our books. We even ventured out to look at the torrents coming down from the falls - fantastic and a bonus, the falls are not usually that spectacular.

Food beautifully presented and great breakfasts. Will definitely go back - good to find such a relaxing hotel which is both unpretentious and welcoming.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are great but be aware there is a road in front of the hotel beside the lake. This d...

An excellent 2 day stay with breakfast and evening meals included. A warm welcome from reception staff with a nice surprise of an upgrade. The room, whilst on the side of the hotel, had excellent views of both the lake and the fells. Facilities in the room can simply be described as superior - everything really good quality from bath robes in the wardrobe to good sized bath towels in the modern, clean bathroom and what a comfortable bed. The evening meal started with canapes in the bar, followed by excellent food in the restaurant - good wide choice of food to suit all tastes - and a very comprehensive wine list. Staff attentive, polite yet friendly and efficient.
Location lends itself to either energetic fell walking, relaxing in the hotel &/or spa or, like us, an ideal base for touring the area. Weather not fantastic but what you might expect in the Lakes -never go there without good waterproof clothing - you never know, you might not need it!! Our second visit to this hotel this year - our last stay was in February and the mountains topped with snow surely enhanced the splendour of the scenery.
Tip: we travelled first time with Travelzoo but the 2nd time we were notified of the offer directly by the hotel - it's worth leaving your email details with them - they will contact you if they have good deals to offer.

Room Tip: We have been upgraded both visits and understand the staff will always try to upgrade where possible

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights after having a long weekend on Edinburgh, it was a halfway stop of on our way home to Yorkshire. I booked the deal through Travelzoo and got a very good deal of 130 per person for 2 nights, including breakfast both days, Pimms and strawberries on arrival, and a 4 course meal on the frst night. Also a free room upgrade from a fell view to a Lake view, uunfortunaltely this upgrade wasnt available so we were in a superior room, with a view of the top of a single story building and the garage of the adjioining cottage, not all bad though as we had a balcony with chairs and a table.
The room size was fine and the bed was huge and comfy, although we were unable to get any proper sleep due to the hotel being incredibly warm, we had to sleep with the window open and the curtains open to allow for some ventilation which would have been ok if it hadnot been torrential rain falling onto a flat roof, quite noisy:-), accepted that the weather cannot be controlled and not the Hotels fault, but the heating could have been adjusted. The main dining room was also very hot.
The second nights sleep was alos disrupted by the most inredibly creaky floorboards in the world, this combined with someoone who insisted on walking around their room from 22.00 - 02.45 in the morning equated to me being very frustrated and unhappy and haviing to ring the night porter, who claimed to have gone up to the room above and said he couldnt hear anything and that there was no light on in the room, even though i was stood out on the balcony looking up at the room and could see that the light was on and window open!!. The person eventually stoppped pacing around allowing us 5 hours sleep until 08.30 when they got up and it started allover again. Having said all that, the staff were very nice, polite and helpful, and if the creaky floorboards and heating hadnt have been a problem it would have been perfect.
It is a secluded, well equipped hotel, Hot Tub, swimming pool, beauty rooms, nice bar, perfect for a relaxing break and plenty of walking if you wish to do so.
The best thing about the hotel was the food, absolutely gorgeous, from the evening meal, to breakfast to room service.
Definitley worth a visit, just make sure you ask about the heating and creaky floorboards if you get put in room 126:-).

Room Tip: Lake View rooms, amazing view, probably creaky flooorboards in most rooms so maybe take a set of ear...

I cannot complain about this hotel at all, the service was brilliant, the staff were lovely and the food - WOW! The bed has to be the most comfortable I have ever slept in and the bath towels are the best I have found in a hotel! The rooms are spacious enough and clean, everything you need is there for a restful nights sleep.
I agree the lift is small, but they do have a wheelchair that fits if needs be (the stairs arnt too much of a hike so you cant complain), and the parking is across from the hotel which may be to some peoples dislike (maybe blue badge holders only infront of the hotel) - apart from that theres nothing bad you can say about this hotel.
Ohhhhhh the foooooood, it is amazing, service is good (the only thing I would say is it is a little too fast! You had only just finished one coures and the next was there, maybe a little break in between to let the food settle in your tummy) - still the food was DELISH!

All in all a GREAT hotel, not to far away from the Slate mine, Ambleside, Keswick and Cockernmouth.

Love the complaint below, obviously they went to the storage room by mistake with the crammed furniture! And complaining about bottled water - there is a kettle and complimentary biscuits/tea, would rather that than a bottle of water! Guess it just depends on how fussy you are, I have been to some of the top hotels in the world and The Lodore Falls rates highly amongst them!

Room Tip: Check Travelzoo for deals - well worth it

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our beautiful hotel on this site.

Your remarks regarding the previous reviewer who complained about lack of water etc. etc. had us all in stitches!! But seriously your review does give such a true reflection of the hotel, it's staff and services and I'm sure that potential customers will make a sound judgment based on it rather than that of js2204.

Many thanks, once again, for your kind words and I do very much hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to our beautiful part of the world in the future.

Kind regards

Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff who looked after us perfectly. Superb location overlooking Derwentwater. Delicious food with a different menu every evening including local specialities. We didnt sleep perfectly as we found the mattress a little soft but otherwise the room was very comfortable. We felt thoroughly spoilt and had a wonderful time. We shall be back next year.

Room Tip: Rooms are priced on a view basis.we did not mind about that so had most basic which was spacious and...

Loved the beautiful setting of this old fashioned, well run, charming hotel. The food was superb and the wine list large and eclectic. Shame I did not get to try the hot tub next to the stream that runs down from the waterfalls, rain stopped play. May be next time!
