“great place to stay”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

booked for a one night stay was greeted by the owner who explained everything we needed to know. The room was ok although the sash window had dropped and had a 1/3 inch gap which when the room faces onto the main road could have been a tad noisy. This was easily fixed though(with t bag), the bed was very comfortable and bathroom very clean.
We went to the bar area for a pre dinner drink and a log fire greeted us. With soft sofas and comfortable furniture we placed our meal order and it was a culinary delight and even if you are staying in other accomodation in the area this place is a must for meal times.
Staff very courteous and helpful and when enquiring if it would be possable for a sandwich to take on our journey they said it was no problem.
We would definately revisit in the future.

We were staying in Alston for a couple of nights and decided to eat at the Alston House. We were greeted immediately we walked in the door and offered drinks and a menu. We sat down by the log fire and it felt very homely. We selected the sea bass and pork medallions and both meals were superb. We were also presented with a delicious freshly warmed half-loaf of crusty bread and butter to keep us going until our meal arrived. I had the baileys creme brulee which was lovely. The service at Alston House was superb and far better than we had received in the hotel that we were staying at a couple of miles away (but that is being reviewed in another review). We enjoyed our meal so much we decided to come back and dine there the following evening. On this occasion we had beef lasagne and king prawn and feta cheese in a chilli sauce with pasta. Again we were presented with freshly warmed crusty bread and the meal was superb. We can only say that we would not hestitate to recommend this hotel for dining. You will receive fabulous food at a very good price and the service is excellent!

This is an excellent place to stay. Staff extremely friendly and helpful.
Food great - no small helpings though! Excellent value for money.
I was there on business but will go back for leisure visit. I had a beautiful room which was warm and cosy. Selection of coffee and tea. Cannot find any fault- except for the rain!

We stayed here on day 2 of our coast to coast bike ride. The owner met us and was friendly and helpful, showing us where to put the bikes, and asking if we needed drying facilities etc. The rooms were lovely, especially our bathroom with an enormous bath - just what we needed after a hard day of hill climbs! We enjoyed our evening meal - plenty of choice and good quality, although the restaurant was busy and we waited quite a long time. Breakfast was good too, and the fresh fruit salad was great. Overall, a really good place to stop, and recommended for any C2C cyclists.

We stayed in this hotel for one night during a Coast to Coast bike ride. The welcome we received was warm and friendly, even though they were hosting a wedding at the time! They arranged to store our bikes in a dry, secure place. Our room was big with lovely furniture and good quality bed linen. The bathroom was well designed...up to boutique hotel standards. We ate there that night and, again, despite the wedding party, service was friendly, attentive and efficient. The food was superb, with a good choice and generous portions. Great choice of breakfasts too. We all really enjoyed it and it knocked the hotel we stayed in the first night into the shade, doing right everything that it had got wrong. It would be a nice place to stay and do lovely walks from. The town itself is straight out of the old Hovis ads and there is a sweet narrow guage railway that the non-cyclists enjoyed

As a family of 3 we stayed here at the halfway point when completing the C2C challenge. We sweaty, bedraggled cyclists and our mud-splattered bikes were greeted in a warm, friendly manner. Our bikes were accomodated for, despite there being no official bike shed, our rooms were spacious and the bathrooms in particular were beautifully decorated. Dinner involved a wide variety of choice and was very good.
One of the best aspects of the stay was Alston House's generosity... most evident in their packed lunches. When we requested some sandwiches to take with us for the next day, we were offered a) complete control over the contents of the sandwiches and b) the next day, we unpacked a plastic bag of goodies as well as the sandwiches - they had also given us fruit, crisps and 3 of the largest slices of cake I have ever seen.
