Our family of seven, including our two sons, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren enjoyed the week of August 1st to 8th at the delightful Lantern House in the ancient market town of Alston. The accommodation was perfect for our multigenerational group with plenty of space to "spread out". The four floors, all beautifully modernized and furnished with plenty of storage cupboards in the bedrooms, were spotlessly clean and comfortable. The bathrooms are large and there is plenty of hot water which is always a concern for our family members who love long showers. The house has an interesting collection of vintage photographs taken at various times showing the house and village in the past. The town of Alston gave us a great access to as fine butcher shop, bakery (fresh bread out of the oven at 9:00 am), a marvellous cheese shop as well as a grocery store and several pubs. Parking in the market square was easy to find. We would highly recommend the Lantern House for visitors interested in seeing the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall, the North Country and even forays into Scotland.
We spent a week in Lantern House with friends and family. The house has been beautifully restored with a lot of thought put in to what is needed for an enjoyable stay. There are lots of little extras that make a big difference.
The owners are very friendly and helpful, providing us with a change of bedding when we had a changeover in our party.
Alston is a lovely town with many engaging walks right from the doorstep. It is like being in the Lake District without the masses of people. Highly recommended.
