Our first visit to the Cumberland, we stayed between Xmas & New Year, along with our dog and we loved it. Staff were excellent, extremely friendly and helpful. A great bar menu & as someone else has said, a good selection of veggie food too (the veggie lasagne was gorgeous). We had a lovely big room at the front of the hotel which was really comfortable. Breakfast was good too. I should mention that it seems that pretty much all the produce is local which is really appealing, you feel like you're supporting the local community (and it's top quality too). Our dog was made very welcome and loved lying in front of the roaring fire. Also a great selection of real ales which my other half really enjoyed! Friendly locals too, we will definitely return. Alston is a really nice market town with a co-op, butchers, bakers, tea rooms, post office, chippy - everything you could need, and lots of fantastic walks on the doorstep, great scenery. Loved it.

First time at this venue and very impressed. Exceeded our expectations. 6 vegetarian main meals to select from Great value. Staff were very friendly as we're locals. Good pub grub at good value with good atmosphere. Ticked all the boxes for a bar meal out. Will return. A warm welcoming venue.

Really enjoyed our stay here. The staff are great and really helpful. Bar very friendly and a good selection of local real ales. Food was excellent. The room we had could have done with some updating but was ok for what we wanted.
I'd definitely stay again

Overwhelming smell from the deep fat fryer throughout the Inn. Made us feel sick.
Decor is rundown.
Room had mould on wall/curtain/shower.
Food was straight out of the freezer and straight into the deep fat fryer.
On arrival staff were friendly and helpful.
My room was near the kitchen and extractor fan in kitchen was a disturbance until after 11pm
Not much variety for breakfast.
Bed was clean and comfortable.

We stayed at a cottage outside Alston and visited the hotel on a number of occasions for lunch after walks in the surrounding hills. Although it doesn't look much from the outside the welcome was warm and friendly, the food tasty and reasonably priced and there was an excellent choice of real ales and ciders. Nothing is too much bother for the staff and they welcome dogs in the bar. The views from the table in the window are fantastic. Well worth a visit.
