“An ideal ovenight stay for walkers”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

Stayed here overnight on the 20th May 2013 whilst doing the Pennine Way, location for Pennine Way walkers is perfect, the way passes a few yards away from the front door! Facilities are very good and the bedroom room was comfortable. Breakfast was up to scratch but there was a mix up over times, I was told breakfast starts at 8. When I walked in to the dining room at 0750 I found half a dozen people tucking into their breakfast already. When I asked for a packed lunch I was told that I may be better getting something from a nearby garage, this I did but it was not ideal. Otherwise the overnight was top notch and I would not hesitate in recommending it and staying there again.

This was an excellent hostel. It was clean and warm and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The self catering kitchen was well stocked and the meals served by the staff were delicious and very reasonably priced. I was impressed that they were happy to cook for one person and to ask me when I would like to eat. The lounge was lovely and had a quantity of books and games; there was also free wi-fi. Would definitely recommend it.

As you walk the Way into Alston, step up a few steps and you are at the YHA. Clean, tidy with self catering kitchen and a place to make hot drinks. Great breakfast and facilities. Very good value for money.

Stayed for one night while doing the Pennine Way, and I've never been so pleased to arrive at a hostel in my life. Despite the large group of cyclists booked in, we more or less had the kitchen and dining area to ourselves. Facilities were excellent, free tea & coffee, showers were very good and plenty to go around, and you can sit in the dining room and watch the red squirrels in the trees next to the river. Although it was purely a stop over point for us, I'd love to go back for a weekend.
