I agree with other recent reviews. The room was spacious but that was probably the only good part.8£ for a tuna sandwich-ridiculous.The worst part was the service for the evening meal.We waited 50 minutes for a bowl of soup then another 35 for the main course. The staff who were waiting on did their best but the kitchen just couldn't keep up with the orders. We were supposed to be there for 2 nights with 3 rounds of golf.We stayed 1 night, played no golf (weather was atrocious-obviously hotel not blamed for that)then came home.Never again

Just returned from a golf break & whilst our party enjoyed the hotel & the evening meals, the service is very poor. At breakfast having to wait 15mins for a pot of coffee & toast seems rather unnaceptable when the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. Dinner wasn't much better either although the staff couldn't be blamed as they were pleasant enough but stretched - the restaurant requires a Manager to oversee the service. Check out was an absolute joke - 1 receptionist & 12 people queeing!!! £3 to use your credit card? You're having a laugh since a company of this size will pay minimal processing charges if any! Bar & sandwich prices ridiculous which allowed us to go to the pubs each night & the hotel lost probably £300+

My golf group have been asking me to book this hotel for a number of years. While its not been without the occasional highlight, so much was disappointing. The food and rooms were good, but so many small things let this place down

- not enough staff on reception. I write this piece in a 15 person queue to check out, with 1 member of staff on, who is doing his best
- constant chasing for every aspect of service in the dining room. Toast, coffee, then butter for the toast, then the meal itself, water, wine orders etc etc etc..the staff, particularly the males ones, just dont seem to understand the words, or maybe don't care
- the dinner reservations were wrong and I booked them a year ago.....to be fair it's possible this was the booking agencies mistake (but they never have before)
- I couldn't buy a cup of coffee after 11pm. This is because the system treats it as hot food and their licence doesn't cover this. In reality I guess they are saying they don't want to pay extra on the licence. I have no problems with commercial decisions, but a hotel that won't sell you a coffee? Odd.
- the golf courses were quite good, but the general layout of the golf parts of the hotel is all over the place....not the end of the world, but this place is up against others who do it better
- coming to a 4* hotel like this, I expect to pay a bit over the odds, but £11 for a club sandwich and over £4+ for a pint just left us feeling this place was charging at the top end of premium. £3 charge for the soon to be outlawed practice of using a credit card is also at the higher end of the scale.

The issue for hotels generally is that there is no inertia to keep you booking with them, where there's so much choice. I suspect they have a lot of guests who stay once and dont return......like us.

Got no reply when I attempted to book by phone despite several attempts. No answering service at all. I managed to book online. The booking was for one night room only for one person and the price £99. When you come to pay the hotel wants a 3% surcharge to pay by credit card. If you want wi-fi access it will cost you £10 a day. I asked for a wake up call and watched while the receptionist put it on his system. I did not get my wake up call. The room was ok, the hotel generally is very bland, if you want character don't bother. I realise that people go for the golf and spa, but apart from the main course in the restaurant which was very good, the service was not to an acceptable standard and the price paid for the room was not justified at all.

The hotel is quite new and everything is very clean and tidy as one might expect.
The staff were very friendly and the food and facilities, including the spa were excellent.
I used the golf course which was perfect for a society and in excellent condition.
Great feeling from arrival to departure.

Had a wonderful overnight break here. With evening meal, breakfast and two Spa treatments thrown in ...what a bargain!! Guided to the entrance by a very helpful receptionist and shown through to the Spa as we were only just on time for our first treatment. Enjoyed it so much that we booked an extra one.

Rooms was lovely, clean and well presented. Spa treatments were really good and the food was excellent! The steam rooms were not as impressive and felt more like an "add on" rather than a feature. Think that these could do with some attention and modification.

One slight down side to the evening was that some of the guests were a little noisy especially when going to their rooms late at night. I know that the hotel can't do anything about that but a polite note and possibly a mention to the guests whilst in the bar would help I am sure. Apart from that it was great. would definitely go again.

I recently went to Portal Spa and I had the most wonderfully relaxing stay, there.

We arrived a little late for our treatments but we managed to call ahead and spoke to Nikki, who managed to sort everything out for us so that we still had the treatments that were included.
The hotel was lovely; the room was nice, modern and spacious; the food was wonderful; the staff were excellent - so friendly and helpful, especially Nikki, who I thought was absolutely superb! The Spa was lovely and the treatment sublime.

We had such a relaxing time which was really needed.

I really would recommend staying at Portal Spa to anyone and at £119pp for all our meals and treatments, what a bargain!!

I will hopefully be able to go back very soon and repeat what really was a fantastic stay.
