“Impersonal function conveyor belt”
Reviewed June 30, 2008

amazing building & location, above average rooms (although the bathrooms were dated) but as a venue for weddings and parties AVOID... the place does not understand service and is manned by children who defensively mal-manage events in a conveyor belt fashion! Multiple weddings each day and you are not going to feel all that special! we attended a friend's brithday party and were appauled by the poor management of the event only to be told, by the recently post-pubescent duty manager when we complained, "what do you expect when we have had 2 weddings already today in the castle!". If you want a conveyor belt function with beige deep fried food, this is your joint... but if you appreciate the better things in life and personal attention, avoid this joint!

Stayed for one night on 14/6/08 as going to a concert at Delamere forest. Booked directly with hotel who gave me the best internet price of £150 for a four poster room including breakfast. They advised me at the time of booking that a wedding was taking place that day so noise may be an issue, which I felt was good service on their part. The grounds and entrance are spectacular and quite imposing! When we arrived the wedding party were having pictures taken and bubbles were swirling around the castle - quite magical! We checked into room 311 which was ENORMOUS! Have never seen ceilings so high! Lovely room, with enormous comfy bed. Very quiet also - we wern't affected by the wedding at all and noise not an issue even in the evening. My only small critisism is that when we arrived I phoned the restaurant to see if we could order something light before going out, which I was assured was not a problem, but when we arrived at restaurant at 5.30pm as arranged kitchen was closed. But this was a minor problem. Bathroom in room was also lovely - great slipper bath and separate shower and the water was scalding hot. Perfect! No room service available in morning for breakfast due to size of castle, but had a yummy breakfast in the restaurant with a really good selection of continental/cooked breakfast. The only other critisism is that checkout is at 10am - too early! As new parents on our first night away without baby would have loved a long lie in! But again, only a minor issue. Peacocks were in full display on our way out which was lovely - felt like a princess! Fab hotel, friendly staff - would thoroughly recommend this hotel to others.

  • Liked — Fabulous setting, room and lovely bathroom. Fascinating building.
  • Disliked — Check out way too early!

I used this hotel just recently for a conference and accomodation and the whole event ran like clockwork. Check in was great, the staff were really helpful and friendly, the rooms we used were beautiful, the setting and grounds are outstanding and the rooms were great. The only 2 let downs were the size of food portions - tiny, to say the least and the bathrooms in the rooms were a little dated but still perfectly serviceable.

  • Liked — Beautiful grounds and setting
  • Disliked — Dated bathroom

My husband and I and our two daughters (ages 11 and 8) just returned from a self-guided tour of England. As part of the tour, we wanted our girls to have a "castle experience", so I scanned the internet and was delighted to find Peckforton Castle, which we booked two months in advance of our trip. We followed up with telephone confirmation of our booking, and were advised and received email confirmation that we had reserved two nights in Room GF2, which was a ground floor family room containing a queen size bed with two twin beds in an attached stone alcove - all very "castle-ish". The cost was approximately $320 (US/CAD) per night for the four of us, but we thought we would splurge just for the experience of sleeping in a castle. On the day of our arrival, we were given Room 308, which was up three flights of stairs (with a lot of luggage in tow!), and which was definitely NOT the room we had booked. It was much smaller, and was extremely plain, with just barely enough room for the beds. When we questioned this at the front desk, the only explanation that we got was that someone else had already checked in to GF2. We determined that our room was adequate, despite our disappointment, and carried on.
This castle is beautiful. The grounds are stunning, the setting is magnificent and the peacocks strut as if they own the place. For our daughters, the experience was magical. From the banquet hall to the stone stairwells, from the woodland paths to the peacock roosts, they savoured the experience, and for that I am grateful. For my husband and I, however, the practicalities of the situation really put a damper on our enthusiasm. Not getting the room that we booked was just the beginning. The plumbing in the castle leaves much to be desired in that it makes extremely loud grinding noises anytime anyone in our room or surrounding rooms runs a tap or flushes the toilet. It was loud enough to wake us in the middle of the night.
When we returned from a day of touring for our second night in the castle, we found that the beds had been made, but the towels had not been freshened, the toiletries had not been replaced, and, worst of all, the glasses in which our daughters had had a glass of milk the night before had not been washed or replaced. If that wasn't bad enough, someone had gone to the trouble of swiping out the inside of the milk glasses with a cloth (you could clearly see the streaks of milk on the inside of the glasses), and then replacing the glasses upside down on the tray as if they were fresh and ready to use!
There was a TV in the room, but it was mounted high on the wall and there was no remote control and no one could reach the controls. There was a heater in the room, but only the bracket on the wall which used to hold the remote control for that - there was no remote control, nor any apparent means to turn on the heater. One of my daughters found a toy (not one of ours) under her bed, which makes me think that our room had not been vacuumed prior to our arrival. There were cobwebs in the windows, there was a sowbug in my daughter's bed........... I don't believe it is just my North American sensibilities that leads me to be so offended by this service. We stayed at a number of B&B's during this trip and absolutely every other one provided lovely service and immaculate rooms at a fraction of the price. A lovely facility in a lovely setting is all well and good, but the service at Peckforton Castle was sadly lacking.

We booked two rooms through the castle website - a standard double and a family room. I made a request that the two rooms be located next to each other where possible, and the castle were absolutely fantastic in providing this - and subsequently upgrading the standard double to their 4 poster bridal suite!!!!

As a group, were absolutely thrilled at the upgrade, and couldnt believe how accommodating they had been at my request!

Ill rate the family room first... We were a little disappointed (as you would be if you werent the one staying in the bridal suite) at first, but overall the quality of the room, furnishings etc were above average. The room was spacious and quiet. The only down side was the bathroom - small, oddly shaped (L shape with the loo tucked in a corner) and dated.

The bridal suite... well what can we say - perfection. Huge room with large 4 poster bed on raised platform, claw foot bath, seperate shower, antique furniture and fabulous decoration throughout. Certainly no complaints for this room!

We found the staff friendly (especially in the cellar bar - great guy to have a chat with) and would recommend a stay in this fantastic location - its breath taking!

  • Liked — Stunning location
  • Disliked — car park a little far away (although you can pick up and drop off at front door)

Attended a beautiful wedding at the castle in March. The bride and groom did have some issues with the wedding co-ordinator before the event but all the staff on the day were outstanding. Room sizes and standards vary a lot but this is to expected due to the 'character' of the property. We were lucky enough to have a larger than average room but unfortunately had no view what at all, other than the maintenance and bin area at the back of the castle ( room 111 I think). Friends who paid exactly the same as us had an outstanding view of the Cheshire landscape so check this when you are booking. There was a smell of sewage as mentioned in earlier reviews and friends mentioned not being able to sleep due to the noise every time someone in the hotel flushed the toilet! The bathrooms could do with a little updating. Food and service at the wedding was excellent and the staff can all be praised. Breakfast was also good but a little shambolic in its arrangement as it is self service and not that well organised. The 10am check out seems ridiculous as there was a long queue (not enough staff?) and after a wedding on a Sunday you would think they could have given the slightly hung over guests at least another hour to sleep in as the hotel could not have been that busy on a Monday. Overall this hotel is a stunning venue, ideally located in fantastic Cheshire countryside and the staff go out of their way to make your experience special.
