“Stunning Victorian Hotel in beautiful South Cheshire”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

Just a few minutes away from Beeston Castle and in the midst of several tourist sites and many Cheshire Walks, this hotel stands proud in the surrounding hillside.

Afternoon tea is served in the Stables bar, which is warm and comfortable but also welcoming to walkers, and is a real treat. With a variety of tasty sandwiches, home cooked scones and cookies, it was an excellent selection and service was first class.

We had a special offer coupon and so it was great value, but even at full price it would have been an enjoyable treat.

There are lots of other facilities in the Hotel, which I haven't sampled, such as the brasserie and health and beauty salon, but if the tea is anything to go on, they will be of a high quality and well worth a visit.

Took my mum for a birthday treat for afternoon tea, it was wonderful and we were well looked after. Plenty of sandwiches, scones, tea and coffee. Such a wonderful setting, served in the lounge, and a perfect afternoon.

Whilst the staff were very helpfull, pleasant and good not do enough. I would not pay the full £155 per night normal rate. The room we were in was clean, spacious, but the bed was very soft and lumpy and neither of us had a good nights sleep on the two nights we stayed. There were a lot a little things that detracted from our stay, but the bed was the main thing - no tissues in the room, linen left in the corridor window ledge, no scrambled eggs at breakfast. Overall a good hotel waiting to get out.

Reception staff were efficient and welcoming. Our room was warm and comfortable. Lovely views of the countryside. Breakfast was consistently good with hot food regularly topped up. We were upgraded FOC to the four poster room before arrival. The room was spacious with a great dual aspect view of local countryside. We stayed 5 nights and enjoyed our stay.

Having said that, we were disappointed that none of the building dated from tudor times and felt the website is misleading. We passed through reception several times a day with our dog and although staff said hello, it would have been good if someone during our stay had asked if we were having a good time, or if our accommodation was ok! This wasn't even asked when we checked out.

We just felt it had the potential to offer so much more. It doesn't quite live up to the image on the website. Cleanliness in the room is a bit hit and miss, Our room was not properly clean on arrival and during our stay our towels were refolded rather than being changed.

Cream tea was a huge disappointment - we've never had it before where it comes with the cream and jam already in the scones and it wasn't particularly nice! We ate in the Brasserie and had a lovely meal but were the only ones in there. The menu includes some very strange combinations which we found offputting and limited our choices. We only ate there once and then ate at local pubs including the Dysart Arms in Bunbury which is nearby.

Overall it was a bit disappointing but we enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here for 2 nights though a money supermarket deal, the hotel from the outside is beautiful and the views of the countryside were stunning but... The inside was a different story, the rooms were old and tired, I don't normally write reviews but I feel the rooms spoilt the rest of the hotel. The bar and restaurant area were nicely decorated, the downside was that the bar staff were hard to find and not very polite, the food was good but over priced, the manager of the hotel was there a lot and even played the organ whilst we ate, which was nice! The breakfast was cold both mornings too. It's a shame because it had so much more potential.

The corridors leading up to our room should have warned us of what was to come. False tiles hanging off the ceiling, lots of tired mahogany wood complete with stains. The four poster bed looked like it had been bought from argos, plain wooden frame, simple canopy hung from elastic from each corner. The mattress had obviously seen better days and as my husband sat down on it you could hear the springs noisily groaning. We asked to see another room but the next was even worse with tired tatty furniture. The staff didn't seem at all surprised that we weren't staying. We will try to get a refund but we bought the voucher through an independent company . The only good point was the price £120 for 2 nights. Probably a lot of folks would say you get what you pay for. I'd say don't waste your £120 stay at home.
