If everyone provided this sort of customer service then would'nt life be great. Have just spent one night in the hotel with my wife and friends and our experience of the welcome, food, choice of beers and wines and the public areas of the hotel was exceptional. The staff seem highly motivated and cannot do enough to make your stay pleasurable. If you like the good things in life and don't want to spend a fortune, then look no further.

Room Tip: We were in room 10 which is a large bed overlooking the high street. We would request it in future.

We were attending an old friends party just a short walk away from this hotel and it was very convenient for us. There was no deal but we were still happy with the price and the room and breakfast could not be faulted. Would certainly recommend this hotel for a relaxing and friendly stay.

Room Tip: Our room was very nice but I can't remember which one it was. I have a feeling it was number 14...

The Swan is set in a small village, offering a relaxed and informal stay whilst still being professionally run. The food and drink were well priced and the quality very good. The room(No 5) had everything we needed and there was no noise from the pub at all,and the bed was very comfortable. There is a regular bus service into Chester/Crewe (Arriva 84) so is accessible without a car. If we were in the area we would stop again and would recommend to friends.

On arriving at Tarpoley, we were quite impressed, with a pretty high street and bunting up as the carnival had just taken place. We were shown to our room, which was at the rear of the building, overlooking the car park. It was very small (seemed more like an ex staff room), however the bathroom was quite nice and their were plenty of fluffy towels and soaps, etc. The window in the bedroom was completely shot and in need of replacement or repair. It would have been nice to have had the facility of a fan in the room as it was stiflingly lot, even though all the windows were open. There was no bedside cupboard on one side of the bed and the mattress was really old and sank in the middle, hence a really bad first night. We complained about the bedside table and the mattress the following day and this was put right immediately, but there were no towels in the bathroom, probably because they were putting all their efforts into swapping the mattress over (feeling sorry for the person who's mattress was swapped). At breakfast, we had a full English, but they served up streaky bacon, which looked like it had been in the frying pan for far too long as it was virtually black! We ate in the hotel the first night, but it was very average and disappointing. The following 2 evenings, we ate out in the town. They served up a good premium German lager and sitting out in the car park was pleasant because it was good weather.

This was our first visit to the Swan, and we shall certainly return, the staff were most welcoming, the food great, and the range of beers excellent, everything you would have expected from a pub with rooms, including off street parking. This all led to a very relaxing stay, in a lovely village. Keep up the good work.

We stayed at the Swan in mid-July, 2013 and initially from the road the property looks very inviting. However, we discovered that the building is now looking tired and needs a complete refurbishment. The windows at the rear were well and truly rotted and are in need of urgent renovation. The room was ok but looked a little tired. Initially, the bed had no bedside cabinet on my wife's side and the mattress was very poor. However, these issues were addressed very quickly by the staff who were most attentive and polite. The stair carpets are very basic and need replacing urgently. One other issue was the bacon served at breakfast. Overall the breakfast was good but we were not impressed with having to eat streaky bacon with no option. The location is excellent right in the centre of Tarporley with restaurants and a handy Co-op nearby. Our room rate of £75 to include breakfast was ok. However, in order to justify more than this it would need to offer a far better presentation than at present.

Stayed here whilst attending a concert at Delamere Forest. Staff were very helpful, arranging taxis for us in advance. Rooms were comfortable with a very nice comfort tray.

Only issue we had was that the sash windows would not stay open and the room was boiling.

Breakfast was fresh and plentiful, and the courtyard to the rear was nice for alfresco drinks.

Would definitely recommend

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear would be quieter as the hotel is on Tarporleys main street.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The 16th century Swan has been welcoming guests through its doors for over 400 years, and was once a convenient resting place for those travelling the 200 miles from London to Chester. Today, our comfortable rooms and welcoming bar and dining areas mean that The Swan continues to be a haven for visitors from far and wide. A regular winner of the Best Kept Village award, Tarporley appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Back then, Tarporley was home to just eight households, but today is one of the largest villages in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, with antique, curio, craft and fashion shops lining its streets. Some of The Swan’s most historic features are located in its Hunt Room, home to the Tarporley Hunt Club. Founded in 1762, it is the oldest in England. The club historically met twice annually at The Swan, with each meeting lasting seven days and the hunting taking place largely within the nearby Delamere Forest. In the founding set of rules, members were required to drink “three collar bumpers” after both dinner and supper, and, in the event of marriage, to present each club member with a pair of buckskin breeches. The Tarporley Hunt Club still meet once a year today, a quarter of a millennium after Obidiah Lane went hare coarsing with his chums and decided, after much merriment at the Swan, this should happen every year; “We shall meet for the purposes of general conviviality” he declared! ... more   less
