“A Cautious Return”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

A few years ago we used to enjoy meals the Butley Ash on a regular basis but a steady decline in the quality of the meals and a manager who made us feel a little uncomfortable, particularly if we were taking advantage of reduced price offers which are a welcome feature of the Chef and Brewer Group, prompted us to find alternatives.
A little over a week ago we decided to give it another try. Four of us each had a different meal and each was very enjoyable. We found this very encouraging and we will certainly go again before long because the ambience, service and demeanour of the staff have, with the above-mentioned exception, always been most agreeable.
We enjoyed our experience and look forward to further visits.

“nice place.poor food”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

recently moved to the area and thought we would give this pub a try. We found the place bright clean and it had a nice atmosphere. To be fair our expectations weren't too high as lots of pubs tend to turn out the same type of food nowadays, out of a packet or a freezer bag!
The burger for my daughter arrived over cooked and so dry it was almost inedible, the bit she did eat was tasteless and gristle and the onion rings it came with weren't cooked enough,so were soggy..My husband had fish and chips, the batter on the fish was swimming in grease and the chips were aired. I had scampi and chips and that was average. We ordered garlic bread as a starter which never arrived. The waitress was very apologetic.
i do have to say that the two waitresses that served us were lovely, attentive and very pleasant. i would go back again for a drink but definitely not to eat.

“Sunday lunch”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Nice Sunday lunch, pleasant surroundings and a real fire. Cater for vegetarians and the nut wellington was good.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

We had a reasonably priced lunch for the first time since it became a Chef and Brewer having had good experiences years ago at C & B restaurants in the West Midlands.

The starters were good - pate fine except for the chutney (just appeared to be small chunk Branston Pickle). The mushrooms were lovely.

The mains were disappointing. Rump burger was passable but the steak and ale pie virtually inedible. The meat was chewy and the pie seemed over-cooked. The broccoli was hard, the mash appeared to be from a packet.

The service was excellent, so much so that we didn't have the heart to complain to the servers.

“Pretentious cooking that doesn't quite work”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

A poor starter of black pudding and scallops (!) that was lacking in taste. The best part was the little bit of crispy bacon on top. I then had the duck breast with red cabbage and a strong sauce that killed the taste of the duck. I had been asked how I wanted the duck cooked. My medium rare duck was grey and cooked "upside-down" so the skin was underneath in the thick gravy/sauce. I did however enjoy the pudding. As a plus the service and friendliness of the staff was great.
