The Victorian grandeur of Arley Hall comes with its own price mark-up - it's cheaper just to see the gardens ! These start quite intimately, with small herb, scent and shrub rose garden rooms. These open out into extensive kitchen gardens that bewilder with the fecundity of their fruit and vegetables.
Next comes a huge be-shrubbed walled garden: perfectly controlled and cultivated space, with on one side a long and lush century-old herbaceous border leading up to a dainty white summer house.
Finally, having enjoyed the obligatory pot of tea and buttered scone in the old Stables, you may encounter an extensive nursery with lots of plants for sale on the way out. So handy for the Daimler.
