I wanted to take my mum and aunty out for a traditional afternoon tea today, as my aunty is visiting from abroad. I went to two places that I'd heard of, only to be disappointed that they were not open or were not serving what they advertised. As a last resort, I googled 'afternoon tea in Cheshire' and stumbled upon Davenports. To avoid another disappointment, I thought that I would ring first and I spoke a lovely lady called Belinda ( I think that she is the owner). She told me that a full afternoon tea should be booked in advance but that she could certainly do something for us and even asked what type of sandwiches we would prefer her to prepare. Davenports is a charming place, with gorgeous crockery laid out on the tables, gentle music and lovely decor. Belinda advised us on specific teas according to our taste (which we all agreed was gorgeous). We were served an assortment of DELICIOUS sandwiches made with locally sourced produce, followed by a selection of cakes. The staff were so friendly and we all had a lovely afternoon. If you want a traditional afternoon tea experience, this truly is a lovely place to visit. I don't usually write reviews but I really feel like the staff at Davenports went out of their way to give us a lovely experience at short notice. Service like that is rare these days and we will definitely go back there again.

As their name indicates, there are three parts to this business.

First, the "farm shop". There are some nice little finds in here, with such gems as local cider and little packs of on-the-cob popping corn. So, if you are passing by and pop in to browse for the odd little thing to buy as a treat or a gift, you will probably find something nice. However, as a staple "farm shop" it's rather unfocussed - you would probably struggle to find everything you need for a proper food shopping trip. Is it a gift shop, a delicatessen, an off licence or a grocery? Not quite fully any of these, but a little flavour of each. One thing is certain, it's all lovely but expensive.

The tea room is quaint, clean and pleasant. Coffee is from nespresso capsules, but it was nice to have a choice of flavour strengths. A trio of mini mince pies had been warmed in the oven, which was a welcome touch on a frosty morning. Again, expensive, at £4.75 for one latte and mini mince pies. Service was very pleasant and welcoming.

The florist shop had some lovely Christmassy plants and foliage as well as the usual flowers one would expect. Again, very pleasant service.

In summary, worth stopping off for a look-round if you are passing on the A49 at Acton Bridge (if you don't mind paying a little extra).

I would like to add to you review two things, firstly as a tea room we mostly serve teas, with over three pages of loose leaf to choose from, which we can help if needed. As not everyone likes tea we also serve coffee, but mostly artisan coffee in a cafetiere from Atkinsons, a long established tea and coffee specialist dating back to 1837 based in Lancaster. A very, very minor serving is latte and cappucinos which are from a Nespresso machine as we couldn't justify spending over £7,500 for a semi-professional coffee machine. In comparison to Costa coffee, they charge £2.30 for their large latte, we charge £2.20. For a Costa tea £1.45, whereas most of our teas are £2.00 however we are not a Costa cafe. The the first instance the choice of teas are extensive, and its not a basic tea bag but quality loose leaf, first difference in cost and there are many, we talk to you and find out how you like your tea brewed, then warm both your cup and pot, brew the tea and serve it in bone china tea cups and saucers, many which are vintage and cost a lot to purchase and to stir in your sugar, you will be offered a silver plated spoon, rough edge sugar in a china bowl, with a lace cover, sat on and surrounded by antique furniture in a room decorated with William Morris wallpaper or hand-painted murals. So if you are just dropping in for an instant coffee or latte enroute from a walk or drive then we are expensive, but most people value what they have experienced and come back for more as we offer value for money when you consider what we offer. Lets face it we aren't Claridges at £60 pp for their Christmas Afternoon Tea but we aren't in London, haven't the long established tradition and masses of staff to serve you but we do offer a very good product and hopefully experience and in comparison our Victorian Christmas Afternoon tea at £18.95 for mulled wine, pot of tea / cafetiere, sandwiches, selection of delicious cakes, homemade scones, homemade jams and lashings of clotted cream and farmhouse butter and a little gift, great value for money and we are Tea Guild members with an Award of Excellence 2012

We take on board your comments regarding the focus of the farm shop and that has happened purely through demand of customers. Unfortunately supermarkets have encouraged people to demand a wide choice of meats, etc to pick one or two items and while they can do this with their footfall it isn't possible for small farm shops like ourselves hence our range is what you see a little of farm shop, gift etc. as you say. Glad you enjoyed your visit to us and as you're a local (Ian remembered you) maybe visit us more often on one of our many lovely walks.

We stopped at Davenports on our journey .It was a very good choice,we only had coffee but while there we did look at the menu and there was plenty of choice.Belinda was very helpful and gave us some tips of places to visit in the area.We had our coffee in an Alice in Wonderland themed room which was very pretty.
We will call here again for a longer stay, hopefully when it stops raining!

We went to Davenports for a little treat today and were not disappointed at all. The food was excellent, service very efficient and polite and overall a great (if a bit pricey) experience.

Not being a typical 'afternoon tea' type (myself and other half are in our early 30's) we didn't really know if we'd like it or not but once the tray came out we knew we'd made a good call dropping in here for the afternoon.

We're already planning our next trip, a Victorian themed Christmas visit in December, and are looking forward it already.

Visited as one of a group for afternoon tea. Large and interesting selection of teas. Food excellent, the little cakes are to die for. I loved the selection. Unfortunately the pots of tea arrived some considerable time before the sandwiches and cakes were served. Once we had finished these we had a very long wait for the scones. I enquired where they were as I thought we had been forgotton. By the time they arrived my tea tea was cold. Scones, jam and cream were very good but I would have liked to have a hot cup of tea with them.

Jill M visited us as part of a local WI group and the whole group told us how much they had enjoyed their Afternoon Tea experience with us and both I and the organiser were blown away by Jill's comments. We have always explained to our customers that although our home-made scones have been timed to come out of the oven just prior to the arrival of the afternoon tea booking, we will hold them back to keep them warm and customers are to advise us when they are ready for them to be served. This is exactly what was done with no delay as written in Jill's review. Jill did mention on the day that she herself had chosen to hold back her tea as she preferred to drink it with her scone and that this was her own mistake not ours as she hadn't told us when we took her order. Although we weren't obliged to, we did offer to make her a freshly brewed pot and she refused. To go on to write this review in this way is very damaging to us and completely unfair. We work hard to ensure that every customer enjoys their experience with us and if we have failed in any way, it is important to hear about it at the time so that we can do something about it there and then. Responding to any complaint in any format takes time which in a small business is very precious and would prefer to invest that time in ensuring that our customers get a great experience.
