Description: THE journey from Wheelock Street to Chimichangos may just be a few steps. But as soon as you walk through the door it feels like a voyage of discovery. Shades of orange and subtle lighting lend an ambience to the restaurant. Above the bar is a painted landscape filled with cacti and sombreros playfully hang from walls and chairs. It is the kind of scene you might expect from an inner-city restaurant but this is Middlewich. Chimichangos officially opened at the weekend and the Guardian was invited to give it a try. Owner Jason Tanfield has transformed Kandi’s Steakhouse into a Mexican restaurant. The 36-year-old said he identified a gap in the market as there is only a handful of independent venues in Cheshire where you can enjoy Mexican food. Jason is also drawing on his experience as he used to be the head chef at a restaurant called The Three Amigos in Exeter about 15 years ago. My partner and I were promptly seated and were struck by how attentive and polite the staff were. We were soon sipping Coronas and tucking into some tortilla chips with delicious home-made salsa. To start we had creamy garlic mushrooms in a tortilla shell and jalapenos stuffed with soft cheese which were both perfect. We followed this up with vegetable fajitas and chicken fajitas respectively - and this is where Chimichangos showed its edge over some of its competitors. Firstly you can choose how hot you want your food to be which is sure to be welcomed by both spice addicts and those who like things mild. The portions were also incredibly generous which tends to be unusual for Mexican restaurants. There genuinely was not much to criticise but it would have been nice to have some cheese with the fajitas but im told they do normally and had forgot!! The service was prompt and my partner, a vegetarian, was impressed with the range of suitable dishes. Credit also goes to Jason for making good use of the limited space available. At the time of our visit a large group for a 21st birthday celebration was being accomodated. We were defeated by the time it came to dessert but suffice to say a taste of Mexico is on offer for those with a sweet tooth. The menu even includes a banana wrapped in a tortilla and dusted with cinnamon called a chimichanga. The whole experience was fantastic and comes highly recommended.NOTE:This was a secret food critic from the guardian newspaper just search GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER MIDDLEWICH

We visited chimichangos after a friend mentioned it. We had steak and chicken mixed fajitas very nice indeed and cooked very well. We went for hot which is really hot.... We had to have a pint of water afterwards and we have allot of hot food. So god knows what the very hot dish would be......

“A decent stop-off not far from the motorway”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

Stopped off the motorway on our way northwards and decided to call in here after reading the TA reviews.

When we arrived it was very full, although it was gone 9pm - a good sign.

We ordered just main courses, a chimichanga and a burrito, both with the side that was "a little bit of everything". The portions were generous and we both particularly liked the side and were glad we'd chosen it. If you book in advance according to the menu there is also a freebie every night, such as a free cocktail, a free dessert etc etc.

Service was fine, the waiter did his best to keep us happy! No complaints from us.

“Birthday meal at Chimichangos”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

Visited Chimichangos on the 16th July for my birthday with 4 other people. This is my 2nd visit to the place and will definitely be back again.
We used the Groupon deal this time around and we got more than value for money. We had either Nacho's or spicy hot chicken for starters. One of them each is a meal on its own really. Very good size portions and the quality of food is exceptional.
The main of burrito or chimichango was a very healthy portion and most of the group struggled to finish. But the food was great tasting and presented well.
Chocolate fudge cake with 2 scoops of ice cream was for pudding and this again was a healthy size. The perfect way to end the meal.
The place itself has great décor and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with good table service provided by the 2 girls who were working this night.
Overall, a great place with exceptional food of high standard with the environment and atmosphere to make any night of the week a pleasant one. Both visits to this place have been more or less full so book up and don't miss out....

“Lovely atmosphere, great food”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

This was our 3rd visit to Chimichangos and yet again the food was fantastic, great portions and very filling. I would definitely visit again even if I didn't have a Groupon voucher as I love the atmosphere, Mexican music and so much on the menu we haven't even tried yet. Only one waitress working but did not have to wait too long for the food and who wants to rush when you have a jug of beer to keep you occupied! Definitely a favourite of ours.

“Pretty average”
Reviewed July 2, 2013 via mobile

We visited here on a groupon deal, had heard good things but were a bit disappointed. Food was very average e.g. Cheese not melted on nachos properly, you get much better at the barburrito chain. Was about half full but only one waitress on so service towards the end was slow ( we booked for 6.30)

Decor was good and can imagine it would be a fun place to go on a fri/sat night with a big group
