“Nice pub & restaurant”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

The new owners have done a lot to improve this place over the last few years. Outdoor seating at front and overlooking the canal lock at the rear. So I don't get why it isn't busier? The ambience is pleasant. The background music is great. It's clean and tidy. So what's left? Well they could probably do with increasing the choice of lagers and bitters on tap. Carling, Coors and Cobra if i recall. And last time I visited they had no Sauvignon Blanc. The homemade beef burgers are some of the best I have tasted anywhere. They have a specials board and other dishes have lived up to being above average pub food.

Service. I was most recently there at lunchtime. The style of service is reserved, not warm and engaging. That's not to say they aren't friendly. You feel like you've never visited the place before. And even if you haven't, the paces i like best make you feel like you are being welcomed back. Maybe that's just me! Food. Not everyone likes a burger medium rare so, when taking the order, I would suggest they ask how you would like it done. It would also be an idea to give you a menu when you open a tab at the bar. In fact, I would suggest that they should ask everyone who comes in at lunchtimes if they would like a menu. And finally, given that the place was nearly empty when i last visited they could have cleared the table when we had finished eating (Its a pet hate of mine to be left sitting with empty plates).

The venue is very dog-friendly. I really like this place for its ambience - and i can always get a table!

“Great friendly local”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

The Big Lock is my local pub / restaurant & enjoy going on a regular basis. Great wine list - Southern Lights Sauvignon Blanc is definitely my favourite. Excellent home made steak & ale pie for dinner last night. Always a warm & friendly welcome. Great place to sit outside during the warmer days & watch the canal barges go by. The menus is varied & well priced & the 'weatherboard' specials should always be checked out.

“Not to bad”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Booked table for daughter's 18th birthday. First time I had been there; ample car park, pub and toilets all very clean etc.
Food was ok and decent amounts, only problem when you wanted a drink staff seemed to be out of sight, and you had to go and find a member of staff.
Total price; even though I thought to menu was a bit expensive for pub grub, was less than I had estimated.
Over all a pleasant evening.
