Six of us went on a Sunday for a birthday meal. Three of us had the Sunday Roast (we had beef) and three had a half chicken. The beef was cooked almost to a pulp and gave a whole new meaning to 'melt in the mouth'. It was more the consistency of pate than roast beef. It also lacked any flavour. The half chicken dish was excellent; moist and tasty meat and very generous portions. A definite hit with those who chose it.
A 10% service charge was added to the bill. This amounted in our case to approximately £11. I have absolutely no problem with this. What I do have a problem with is when the card machine asks whether I want to leave "a gratuity". It's either one thing or the other but it should not be both. When I mentioned it I was told that that was the way the machine was set up. By whom I wonder? I feel this is simply a method of extracting money from customers who either haven't noticed that a service charge has already been added or instead hoping that customers will be embarrassed into leaving a second tip.
Please reconfigure your machines and stop this sharp practice.
