This was our second visit to the Merlin. On both occassions the restaurant was superb as was the service, what lets it down is the accomodation. Dusty and dirty in places and maintenance is very poor. We wont be staying there again, but the food is excellent

We stayed at The Merlin for my husbands birthday. I often drive past and have always wanted to stay. The review's put me off to be honest but location, price etc made me want to give it go.
I'm so glad we did. It was such a relaxing break. Check in very quick and effortless. The room was beautifully decorated. My one complaint would be the heat in the room [ however there was a fan] The bathroom was really lovely, huge shower.
We ate in the resturant . The food was super. The atmosphere was just perfect.
Breakfast [ which is included in the price] was very relaxing. Jazz music playing, the sunday papers and a latte!!!
What more could you want??

I stayed here for one night and would not return. This is not a hotel but a lively local pub with rooms. On a Sunday night they cannot provide food for guests arriving late - not even a sandwich. The staff were all very friendly and helpful but did not really know how to run a hotel - they were all bar staff. The check in person did not seem to know what the rooms contained, or even if they were occupied. Most of the rooms don't have a bath, just a tiny shower room, and being on the main road, the hotel is very noisy.

It is the season of goodwill so lets focus on the positives. This place does really good food, has a wide range of beers and wines, a roaring log fire in the bar and pleasant attentive staff. It is very handily placed for Alderley Edge and Wilmslow and is close enough to Manchester Airport to provide a viable alternative to the faceless chain hotels on site.

However, it has clearly been done on the cheap despite only having 10 rooms. The beds are comfortable but small, the bathroom ditto and the furnishings just look like they were done quickly and not that well.

Another issue was that on one of the coldest days of the year, the car park and outside spaces had not been gritted and thus were a bit of a nightmare to negotiate. Also, upon reaching our room on said cold day, the heating was off and had to be switched on by the staff as it was off across all the guest rooms !

Nice design. Lovely bar and restaurant. Pleasant staff.Buffet breakfast was perfectly acceptable. Did have a dodgy pint of Timothy Taylor in the bar, though. There are 2 minus points against this hotel - the heat and the noise. I assume these are both connected. As it's an old building, I don't suppose they could have installed air conditioning, and the many halogen bulbs in the corridors and rooms give off an enormous amount of heat making the rooms and corridors stiflingly hot. The other problem is the noise. If you get a room at the front of the hotel, you have constant quite loud noise from the main road immediately outside.  As there's no air-con, the windows are ordinary single glazed sash jobs which let a lot of noise through. 7/10 for this hotel. I might try it again in the winter

Good sized room, very clean. The staff were efficient and helpful; nice evening meal; only buffet breakfast available but that was adequate and well stocked. Very pleasant patio for eating and drinking. Only downside was significant road noise from the A34.

Merlin was a pleasant surprise - us, the industry people, always expect the worst!!

Lovely modern room, flatscreen TV on the wall (although a bit of a temperamental remote control - did what it wanted to do, not what I wanted it to do) and exceptionally friendly staff... there was a maintenance issue in my room, but it was dealt with rather well.

One negative are light fittings, particularly in corridors - nothing wrong with them design wise, very beautiful, but the lamps give out so much heat, it is unbearable!! (admittedly, it was a hot weekend). Try changing for low energy bulbs guys...

Overall - great! If they promise to install air con, I'll be back very soon.

On the restaurant note, great food, excellent service and a really great garden - cured my hangover in no time!!
