“The food really is quite good”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

Delightful meals at the restaurant, although the ambient music can be quite loud in the evenings. Overnight accommodation was agreeably up-to-date but frankly dank (slightly smelly bathroom, clammy sheets) on a dark autumn night...and yes, there is the problem of noise from downstairs, although I found it less distracting than some other reviewers. (Always take earplugs when staying over a restaurant or pub.) The real standout, here, though, is the service, which was among the friendliest and most attentive I have enjoyed lately. I will return whenever I am in the vicinity, especially to the restaurant for lunch.

Trip advisor review:

I needed to find accommodation near Alderley Edge for 3 nights for business and The Merlin was recommended to me. I also stayed for another 3 nights the following week.
• Staff are very friendly and helpful.
• Pub atmosphere is lovely, especially when by yourself. Very cosy and good for people watching.
• Pub food is good but a reduced menu might work better – there was almost too much choice.
• A cold breakfast is included (hot breakfast at extra cost).
• 10-15 minute walk into Alderley Edge (a cab was only £3) where there are great restaurants and bars (Bubble Room, Alderley Bar & Grill, Gusto, The Botanist)
• Stayed in Room 4 first week then Room 6 for second week. These are rooms at the front so there is some road noise and possibly bar noise too but I wasn’t bothered too much. I preferred Room 6 because it had a bigger bathroom and a shower, whereas Room 4 had a shower in a bath. Feather pillow and duvet – very comfy bed, but not so much during week 2 – I think the duvet wasn’t feather. Rooms are spacious and decorated with a contemporary feel but there were a few small things that could have been improved: cold water tap in Room 6 needs fixing; many wires / cables visible which could be tidied away.

Overall the stay was very nice and I would choose to come back here. My other colleagues have stayed in the ‘posh’ Alderley Edge Hotel (tiny rooms) and the Wilmslow Premier Inn. They agree this is much nicer.

Really nice hotel conveniently located for exploring Cheshire. The whole hotel is really nicely decorated and all very clean. Mixture of old building and contemporary furniture and fittings. Nice big room very comfy bed and nice bathroom. Lovely bar/restaurant area with a nice atmosphere and lots of places to sit from sofas to a large table for group dinners. We did not eat dinner there but the food did look really nice and we had a nice full English the next morning (paid extra as only continental breakfast included). Staff all very friendly and helpful. A 10/15 min walk in to Alderley Edge or quick taxi to Wimslow for a night out. Would stay again.

Room Tip: Our room was at the front these are a lot bigger than ones at the back.

We went to The Merlin over the weekend for a friends birthday and enjoyed a lovely meal. As there were approximately 12 of us so plenty of room for errors to be made. Fortunately this was not the case. The Merlin allocated a private dining room to us and our own waitress, Carmen. Without doubt Carmen made the entire exeprience exquisite and she is certainly wasted in the position she is in. She was very attentive, on the ball and friendly. She made sure our orders were delivered in a timely fashion, no-one went without a drink and I can't remember having to wait for anything. She is extremely personable and is gold standard customer service personified. The food was also to a high standard and overall there really wasn't a fault to find.

Family of 3, 2 adults and one 15 year old girl, stayed here for a 'nice' airport leisurely overnight when we were getting a flight to Mykonos late the following morning. It was about £20 taxi ride (10-15 mins) from airport (we made the mistake of using the black taxi instead of the private hire - it was half that on the way back!!). We stayed in what was called a quad family room - double bed and a sofa bed - which was very comfortable and clean but smallish. There didn't seem to be any lift so be aware there are stairs and some sort of 'higgledy-piggeldy' corridors to bring your bags through. The setting is nice and there's a village about 15 mins walk where you can have a pint in an old pub. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant and the food was very good. There was a bit of a dispute in the morning about whether we could still get our breakfast when we presented just after 10 am but the excellent and friendly staff backed off very quickly and served up a delicious cooked breakfast. Recommended if you're using Manchester airport and you want something nice that's accessible from the airport but manifestly NOT an airport hotel.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Good, spacious rooms. Very clean. Very nice bar/restaurant area (we didn't eat there though so can't comment on food) and 10 mins walk into Alderley Edge. Breakfast OK with the option of paying extra for something hot at reasonable prices. Would stay here again.
