It was closed!! But the Director happened to be in reception, and we had a short personal tour, enlivened by his stories of how Octavia Hill's influence on Social and Town Planning had evolved from her own life experiences. Her principles clearly underpin the creative and challenging exhibits in this museum, who aim is to energise particularly the young visitors, who can have little concept of Victorian slum dwelling and Cholera epidemics. " Did you go to school in a horse and carriage, Granny?"

The site has a nice tea shop now and seating in the garden. Take out membership and hace access to this lovely location - close to town centre but not crowded.

The museum has recently expanded into the otheer half of the original Hill's house and there has been extensive improvements e.g. a tea shop and improved facilities. Almost so bog now it's easy to get lost.
When the rest has been finished it will be great for school groups etc.

Great museum. Octavia Hill was a pioneering social reformer and the museum (also her birthplace) discusses her life and work. The kids loved the 'Victorian' cellar which showed the poor living conditions of people living at the time. Her ideas on housing and society are explained in an informative and light-hearted way. We all really loved the place and have told friends to go. They have a website I believe.
