We stayed here for 2 nights in a double ensuite Budget Lodge Room at a cost of £69.75 per night including breakfast.
I had previously telephoned them and asked for a bottle of champagne to be put in our room.
On arrival we were given a very warm welcome and personally shown to our room by a very helpful member of staff.
The room was very nice – I certainly wouldn’t have classed it as “budget” end, in fact we have stayed in many other places that have charged much higher and were not as nice. The room was very clean, spacious and nicely decorated, flat screen TV, 2 easy chairs and a coffee table. Nice touches were 2 bottles of water, tissues and nice size bath towels, black out blinds – a god send!!. Very good shower (wish hoteliers would put corner racks inside showers as it is difficult for some of us to keep bending down to the floor to get our shampoo, body wash etc!!).
Our champagne was in the room in an ice bucket but sadly there were 2 wine glasses and not flutes!! Not the end of the world but it certainly doesn’t taste the same.
We went to the restaurant for dinner, what a lovely building the actual Hall is, and the service and food was excellent. We have only one complaint: We wanted another bottle of the same champagne but was informed that they had now ran out (it was Louis Dornier @ £25.50 per bottle) and they offered us Piper Heidsieck at £39.95. My husband said that we would have it if they gave it as the £25.50 price which they said they couldn’t do. 10 mins later they “found” a bottle of the Louis Dornier et Fils Brut – when I asked why they couldn’t find it earlier they didn’t reply – found this very odd!!
Breakfast the next morning was good but there was only scrambled eggs – we asked if we could have fried eggs and was told it was no problem. When they arrived 1 was rock hard and the other had obviously broken in the frying pan and was hard and flat!! But the rest of the breakfast was good as was the staff.
We went out for lunch but when we returned in the afternoon there was a rock band playing in the ballroom and guests could go in for free. It was brilliant – not everyone’s cup of tea but definitely ours!!
In the evening we went to the restaurant and had the Table d’hote menu at £11.95 – amazingly good value for money – would highly recommend it – we were so full we asked for children’s portions of dessert!!
Sadly, we do have a complaint to make about breakfast on Monday morning. Again, we asked for our eggs to be cooked and this was not a problem – they arrived but when we went to the hot buffet there was hardly any food left and there wasn’t anyone around to ask to top it up – eventually my husband knocked on the kitchen door and asked when some more food would be coming and they said about 5-10 minutes so our eggs were left on our table for 10 mins whilst we waited for the food to be cooked – this was very annoying as someone should have been keeping an eye on the food.
Apart from the few incidents I have mentioned we would highly recommend this place and for what they charge I doubt if you could get much better anywhere else.
