“Jane Stuart”

Friends Meeting House
Reviewed September 14, 2014

Visited the property during the Heritage Weekend. The meeting room had an excellent set of display boards about the activities of the Friends during the World Wars and other conflicts. The garden contains a number of headstones of graves of the Peckovers and other 'Quakers' including that of Jane Stuart a daughter of King James 11 of England.
A corner of the garden has been planted in memory of the botanical work of many friends.

I visited this property during a 'Heritage day' and it was well worth the visit. The story of 'Princess Jane' ('natural' daughter of James II) was really interesting and her beautifully tended grave in the stunning little garden was wonderful to see with its very old box hedge inscription. I don't know how often it is open, but the people are lovely, the building is great and the history is fascinating. Yet another wonderful building on the North Brink.

This Meeting House on the North Brink was built by Algernon Peckover. Behind it is the small graveyard where members of the Peckover family are buried. Another grave is that of Jane Stuart (an illegitimate daughter of James II) who to lived in Wisbech and died in 1742, aged 88.
The house is a nice looking addition to the Brink.
