I cannot speak highly enough of this small establishment. Stayed Sun 12th May /Mon 13th May. Mock Elizabethan, this fine, cosy hotel was built by the Rothschilds originally to accommodate the architect & engineers working on the Manor which is, of course, the main attraction to this village. Enthusiastic, welcoming staff who, without exception, are happy in their work and seem proud of their hotel. We were greeted by Anna, front of House, who showed us to our antique-furnished room, carefully explaining our package and pointing out the room facilities etc. My wife was not well that week-end and they couldn't have been more courteous or understanding. Dinner was a delight; I chose the foie gras with magret-style smoked wood pigeon as a starter followed by venison served two ways (one was an intricate beignet of the haunch, gently fried in bread crumbs). Both courses were imaginatively presented, super fresh and tasty deriving from Estate-reared game. Breakfast was of a high quality too - the full English (or any generous combination thereof) - a small supplement if you fancy eggs Benedict or the smoked salmon and poached eggs. Excellent, faultless service both at dinner and breakfast. If my wife had been well we'd love to have stayed for two nights but hope to return again in the not too distant future. A thoroughly professional and well-run business.

Dear P H

I was so proud to read your review and used it in a staff meeting to congratulate my team on their efforts! They all join me in thanking you for giving this feedback which is wonderfully motivating to us all.

We are so sorry your wife was unwell when you visited, and really do hope that you will return, both in fine fettle very soon.

Many thanks again.

We stayed at the Five Arrows in mid-April for two nights on a very well priced Travelzoo break. We were very pleased with the whole experience. We were warmly greeted upon check-in and throughout our stay received very good service. Our room was at the top and overlooking the main road. Yes, it's a bit of a climb and, yes, the road can be busy through the day, especially at the traditional rush-hour times. That said, the room was perfectly spacious enough for the purpose, comfortable, good bed and a very good bathroom. The traffic dies down in the evening and overnight and we slept well with the window open.
The food in the restaurant was very good indeed and we enjoyed 2 good dinners and plentiful breakfasts. We had planned on dining out for the second night but, based upon our experience on the first night, ate at ther hotel on the second night as well.
There is plenty to do in the area and Waddesdon Manor is worth more than 2 hours of your time. You can enjoy walks in the grounds of the Manor from the Five Arrows - the main entrance is just around the corner.
Comfortable room, great food, good location and a great price - what's not to like?

Room Tip: We looked at room 8 initially and were also shown room 6. Room 8 was better. It is a quirky property...

Dear TransplantedBrit

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay here so positively. The Travelzoo offer has been very popular and we hope has made us better known to new visitors. Your review of 'Comfortable room, great food, good location and a great price - what's not to like?' is fantastic to hear, and I have passed it on to all the staff. We do hope you will come again as we often have some great dinner, bed and breakfast offers on outside of partner promotions.

We were so excited about our stay at The Five Arrows, but it was an awful stay. The room was charming enough, but there were manifold issues that resulted in one of the most miserable nights stay we've ever had. First off, dinner in the restaurant was good enough, but the service was truly horrible. It took FOREVER even to order a cocktail, let alone any food. They were friendly enough during their rare appearances - just ridiculously understaffed. I cannot even describe how awful the sleeping was. Small beds that tilted to one side, so that you felt you were falling off and, as I said, many other problems. Breakfast was a repeat of dinner. The thing is, there is nowhere else you can go. It's the only game in town, so to speak. When the morning arrived, we complained about the entire experience, but there was no manager onsite. We were asked to wait for over an hour after checking out to speak with the manager, who came in on his day off. utterly ridiculous - and such a shame. It could be a great hotel.

We are confused as to this review posted for a stay nearly a year ago, containing information that we have no way of validating and would have responded to immediately at the time, and held a record of until the matter was entirely resolved. Please do get in touch directly with me at the hotel.

We are delighted to have just received a glowing review and 2AA rosettes for our food in a surprise hotel inspection, so are pleased to say your sentiments from last June would have no foundation at this point.

I would welcome your call, should you choose to contact me.

We have now visited the Five Arrows on 3 occasions for Sunday lunch, it is one of our favourite places for an excellent traditional roast lunch! The restaurent is delightfully old fashioned, the 3 course lunch excellent (except for turnips featuring on the veg plate on one occasion)

Dear JohnA62

We are so pleased to hear of your repeat visits to the Five Arrows for Sunday lunch! It is justifiably popular and with the, as you said, 'excellent' roasts (such as rib eye of beef and all the trimmings for £15.95), we hope you will come again and again!

Many thanks for the review.

We had an overnight stay at this hotel as it was my husbands birthday. The hotel has only 11 bedrooms and we were very welcomed on arrival and staff were excellent, it was clean, friendly and perfect for our stay. Our bedroom was slightly small but wasn't a problem as spent alot of time sightseeing at the local Waddeson Manor which is a must to see. Our evening meal was superb, restaurant cosy but absolutely fine (as expected as it was 19th century). The cooked breakfast in the morning we both thought was a little on the 'standard' size however there was plenty of cold options to choose. from. Overall we would be happy to stay at the Five Arrows again.

Dear Cheeselover3

We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed the visit for your husband's birthday, and are only sorry that we must have been full, or could otherwise have upgraded you to a larger room on arrival if you let us know it was a special occasion. We have only one small double, but it benefits from being one of the quietest rooms!

Thank you for your compliments on the excellent staff and it being 'clean, friendly and perfect'!

We do hope you will come again.

Stayed here one night on business. The property is very impressive, staff super helpful and the food first class.....and not too badly priced.

The building is old but still very well presented.

I was in room 5 and the only negative is that it is very near to the road (main A41) so a lot of road noise all night, mainly lorries, so the quality or sleep not as good as it could have been.....but wouldn't stop me coming again, just try and get a room away from the road if you are easily disturbed by traffic.

Dear Kev-B-Lin

Thank you very much for your comments on the welcoming service and well-presented building. With regard to the windows, in reponse to guest feedback we have had the glazier in to measure them for their triple glazing and are now waiting for stage one of fitting to begin on all windows at the front of the hotel.

Hope to welcome you here again.

We stayed here for 1 night as we got a great deal from secret escapes. We were upgraded to a deluxe room which was situated in the converted stables. It was very quiet, clean and beautifully furnished. Large bathroom with a shower over the bath with a very small screen (floor got very wet!) and the water pressure was a bit low. Tea and coffee-making in room. The bed was quite soft, I loved it, my husband wasn't so keen - having said that we both slept very well.
The evening meal was excellent and chocolate pud with chocolate wine was to die for! Breakfast was very good with continental and full cooked on offer. All this food was also included in our great deal and a glass of champagne too! It was so good I feel I should keep it a secret - oh okay - £99!
The staff were all friendly and very efficient. Lovely garden and large car park. We made the mistake of going to visit Waddesdon Manor first and then going to the hotel. If you are a hotel guest you get free entry to the gardens £7.20 each and then only need to pay for entry if you wish to go in the house.
One of the best value short breaks we have ever had, just wish we had booked another night! would recommend and in fact, have recommended it to several friends.

Room Tip: A room in the converted stable or overlooking garden will be quieter than rooms at front of hotel as...
