“Waddesdon Manor”
Reviewed March 28, 2014

Return visit today. It has to be one of, if not the most impressive estates in England. The gardens are beautiful. The rooms of which there are a large number to view have excellent displays of fine art, furniture and fittings.
Do approach the staff. They are very welcoming and knowledgeable. We were given a really good interpretation of a number of paintings in one of the rooms.
The new car parking arrangement works very well. Maybe a larger shelter to wait in would help given the weather today.
A really good and enjoyable visit.

“They paved paradise and put up a parking lot”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

Waddesdon is our 'local' NT venue, which we visit most weeks during the season to walk in the gardens and view the collection, and have done so for more than 20 years. However, the ridiculous new car parking arrangements have put paid to that. We had heard rumours that the new parking arrangements were problematic, but only experienced the full effect of it today. We arrived to find a long queue waiting for the bus to the house. The new buses are very smart - but also very small, so the first bus filled up and left, then 10 minutes later the second bus filled up and left, and we were still standing in a windswept field.

At that point we began to realise that if it takes this long to get to the house, it will probably take at least as long to get back. So we gave up and went home, extremely disappointed.

The new parking / transport arrangements have turned what was previously a joy into an ordeal. I have to wonder what the management team were thinking of when they planned this 'improvement', but the end result is dreadful and not something that we are prepared to put up with. Joni Mitchell said it perfectly - "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot".

So I am afraid that it is a fond and very sad farewell to our beloved Waddesdon. We will go elsewhere in future.

Dear ovingite,

I am sorry to read your comments regarding the new arrival arrangements at Waddesdon. On Sunday morning we held a race as part of the national Sport Relief charitable events, and there was a sudden influx of runners and their supporters prior to the race starting time in the morning. I am not sure what time you arrived, but it may have coincided with the runners arriving, and I apologise if you had to wait for the bus. Aside from this very short period where there was a wait of 10 minutes, our Transport Manager (who was in the car park all day) was not aware of any other delays in the transporting of our visitors from the car park to the fountain.

I can assure you that we will be paying very close attention to the operation of our new service, and our new team of trained Waddesdon bus drivers will also be doing everything they can to ensure that the system runs smoothly and that waiting times are always kept to a minimum.

The new car park and shuttle bus arrangements are a significant capital investment in the future of Waddesdon, to ensure that it can continue to welcome visitors to one of the most popular National Trust properties in the country, with nearly 400,000 visitors a year. It was no longer viable to try and park all the arriving cars around the fountain and down both sides of the driveway (causing significant damage every year), and we hope that visitors will experience the improvements to the overall landscape during this new season.

“A wonderful place to visit”
Reviewed March 10, 2014

Having grown up in the village of Waddesdon I have been lucky enough to see "The Manor" grow over the last 20 years. I now live a short distance away so I need to drive rather than just walk there.

The gardens, whilst always being fantastic are better than ever. The addition of events such as the Bruce Munroe lights and MAD add an extra something that was missing.

The house is fantastic, and the priceless objects on display are the best in the country.

Finally, the new car park is a wonderful idea, and has been needed for a long time. The roads have always had ruined edges left by poor parking, and on a busy day you had to run the gauntlet of idiot drivers who took no care despite the large number of families around.

When the visitor centre at the new car park is completed the ideal solution to the issues Waddesdon previously had will have been completely sorted.

Looking forward to my next visit.

“Rude Coach Driver”
Reviewed March 10, 2014

Having read some other reviews regarding the new Car Park I have to agree that all is not well. We came just before Christmas to visit the House only to find it was fully booked.. fair enough, there's not much they could do about that. We decided to visit the gardens anyway but found the Coach transfer not to be an improvement. The buses are like charmless council vehicles, and were over crowded and smelled of exhaust fumes. For me it devalued the experience. Unfortunately that's not the end of it. On sitting down for the return journey the bus driver got out of his seat and launched into a verbal assault, shouting out that not everyone had got off yet. Not content with that and clearly unable to calm down he then launched into a second assault. I hadn't noticed that anyone was still to get off and definitely didn't obstruct anyone. This was a very unpleasant end to our visit and personally next time we'll be walking up to the House.

Dear Nicksthename

I am sorry to read your comments regarding the new arrival arrangements for last year’s Christmas season. Since the New Year, we have been working hard to recruit our own team of Waddesdon bus drivers, and the buses have also all been decorated in Waddesdon colours. I am sorry to read of the behaviour you experienced from one the temporary bus drivers, we did have some issues with a particular driver, and I can confirm that he definitely will not be part of the new driving team when we re-open the car park and shuttle bus service from Sunday March 23rd onwards.

We will also be offering a temporary mown footpath route from the car park to the main gardens, and this will be advertised with the information in the new Welcome leaflet.

Thank you for your feedback, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Waddesdon soon,

Yours sincerely,
Simon Wales, Head of Visitor Experience, Waddesdon Manor

“Fabulous House”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

A wonderful French Chateau in an English village. Not your 'run of the mill' country house. This is architecturally magnificent.
