If in the area do not forget to visit the gardens at Cliveden. Once the property of the Astor family, the house is now a luxury hotel and the gardens are looked after by the National Trust. The crumbly south terrace is now under repair but the view is still magnificent with its formal parterres in the foreground and the woods and Thames in the horizon. A very popular picnic spot with families so it can be very busy. Good old fashioned cakes to be had at the Orangery Cafe.

House and history fascinating, gardens absolutely lovely, but go in nice weather. Brilliant value for NT members and ample parking. Family friendly and good for keeping fit, we walked off a lovely lunch from the Orangery cafe by heading down to the river where summer boat trips cost 9.50 per adult.

The gardens were so beautiful which included a large pond filled with fish (large fish). The entrance into the house was very grand with a large water fountain. Unfortunately the house was closed on the day I went and there was some refurbishment going on. Still a wonderful place to also have a coffee, cake etc and just relax, enjoying your surroundings.

From the moment we arrived I lost count of the time we said WOW. The National Trust are doing a terrific job with an iconic and beautiful estate. The grounds are simply beautiful and the shear size and opulence are well worth the effort.

This was our first visit to Clivedon and the main entrance is opposite The Feathers Public House. There is also another entrance through the woodland walk a mile down the road. We found this place is different to other NT gardens. There is a lot to do and see for children as it is very child friendly. The grass is short and there is plenty of seating. It is ideal for picnics. There is a very large and well equipped play area. The ducks and the heron are fully visible and the goldfish are plentiful. It is near the River Thames with its boat trips and miles of wonderful woodland to explore. There is also a giant maze although I didn’t test this! The house is a large hotel although access can be gained on some days. This is a great place to visit, one that I shall return to.
