“Glorious surroundings and helpful staff”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We spent six nights at Cliveden taking advantage of the winter package. The new management team were working hard to spruce the place up ahead of a visit from Relais et Chateaux which the hotel joined at the start of 2013.

Food was of a high standard and the chef very kindly modified the menu to suit my elderly father's slightly restricted diet. A couple of the fish dishes would have benefited from a creamy sauce but otherwise no complaints. Kippers at breakfast were dry but the muffins excellent and freshly baked each day as were the bread rolls.

Room service staff were consistently helpful though the ordering system was a little chaotic as the person answering room service had to put us on hold and ring the kitchen on another line to find out about the dishes of the day.

The grounds are magnificent and closed to the public in winter giving them more of an exclusive feel which offsets the absence of flowers and statues wrapped up in winter coverings.

My only complaint was the heating in my room (Sargent) which was impossible to moderate so I had to sleep with the windows fully open and curtains open in the middle of winter.

Room Tip: If in winter make sure you get a room where the heating can be controlled!

We remember you all well, it was a pleasure to look after you and we especially hope your father enjoyed his stay. Your feedback is invaluable and Carlos & I have picked up on your points. I hope a family gathering might be on the cards again before too long and that we might be your destination of choice again. Kind regards.

We spent 4 days back at Cliveden including New Year's Eve and were so pleased to meet the new management who are taking such pains to get the hotel back on track. We have been staying at Cliveden regularly for fifteen years. The original management were so good and it was sad to see Von Essen slowly run the place into the ground. The start of the renovations were behind scenes where I understand previously if things broke they were never repaired and just left. However they also replaced the beds for wonderful sleep inducing comfort and the TVs. Now they are starting on the redecoration of the bedrooms and I expect the public rooms will be next. Despite the size of the house this is in fact a relatively small hotel with only 38 rooms which is why they need to charge so much. The prices do take one's breath away. The new GM is really good pitching in at all times and setting the example for the rest of the staff. We had such a happy, wonderful time over the New Year.

A huge thank you to the wonderful staff at Cliveden House. We found ourselves back at our car in the National Trust's Cliveden Woodland car park after the gates had been locked, with no way to get out, even on foot. So we walked 2 miles through the woods in the growing darkness, towards the shining beacon of Cliveden House. We wanted nothing more than to ask whether someone could book us a taxi to get us home, but despite our dissheveled appearance we were welcomed in the most charming, friendly manner and invited to take a seat in the elegant panelled lounge. The staff went out of their way to help us out of our problem, bringing us coffee and biscuits, calling the National Trust's duty manager and and driving us back to our car. What's more they refused to take any payment for any of this. This is a kindness we won't forget, we will definitely be back to sample the afternoon tea. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. My goodness what an adventure you had, I am pleased to learn that the team looked after you well and that it all ended on a happy note. I hope that if anyone else ever finds themselves in this position and happens to have read this response that they would always know that they could pop into the house for help. It was our pleasure.

I visited Cliveden last year, and was extremely disappointed by the poor food, poor service and high cost! A friend told me that there had been a change of management last Summer and I should revisit. Taking a gamble, I returned on Saturday. Wow! What a difference a year makes! The food was excellent and so were the staff. A complete transformation. Apparently a new GM started last Summer and has gone through the restaurant and kitchen with a "dose of salts"! Seems that the dead-wood have moved on, and a new team with such a refreshing outlook on quality service and excellent catering have been brought in.

So if anyone like me, was put off last Spring, do give Cliveden another visit. You won't be disappointed.

The hotel building and furnishings, as well as the grounds at Cliveden all belong to the National Trust. Dare I say, the NT needs to spend money on the interior furnishings in the lounges and restaurant. As historic as they are, and lovely to see, they are showing signs of tiredness and are now in need of refurbishment. Come on NT, match the good work being done by the hotel!

I am so pleased you enjoyed your return stay at Cliveden and that you felt the uplift in the experience at the hotel. I have never heard of Hotel Management being referred to as a "Dose of Salts" but you made me smile, thank you. I hope you can return before too long and that with each return visit you will see even more progress. Thank you for your review.

This hotel is glorious from the outside...it's actually awe-inspiring. Unfortunately that's where it ends, from the moment you enter the charm is gone. All of the furniture in the public areas need to be reupholstered, the bedrooms are just shabby and not luxurious in any way. The food is mediocre at best and the service staff is in need of further training. It is such a shame because the estate has such an amazing history and could be home to a magnificent hotel if only in more capable hands. For the prices they charge I would not stay there or eat there again. There are better hotels in that area with more modern amenities, hot water and great service. Lesson learned!

When it comes to restoring such a property it can never be swift, the process is completely bound by meeting the compliances of the National Trust, English Heritage and a number of other interested parties. When we became the new custodians of the hotel a year ago we knew the journey ahead of us was going to be complicated, but our beautiful Cliveden deserves being looked after and we are the Management team to drive that process forward. Many of our guests feel the charm of the house really enjoy their experience that only Cliveden can deliver. I am sorry this was not your experience on this occasion.

Just home from a fabulous few days in Clivedon. We went with our four children on a last minute break and had an amazing time. The grounds are beautiful and the house is simply breathtakingly beautiful on first sight.
It's clear that some things are in need of renovation but there are also signs that this is being undertaken in a careful and sympathetic way by the new owners.
The staff were lovely from the moment we arrived and their knowledge of the house and its history was a pleasure to listen to. Nothing was too much trouble. A journey to London was an easy 40 minute train ride away although we were more than happy to return to tranquility.
Have already booked a return trip!

I am so pleased you and the family had a great half term stay at Cliveden, thank you for your review. With 4 energetic children the 376 glorious acres of Cliveden Estate is the perfect destination for them to burn off that energy & and to let their imagination run wild. Our stretch of the Thames was the inspiration for "The Wind in the Willows", this is a story we can share with them on your return. They could even travel along the river bank in one of our boats which will soon be back in the water.See you soon.

The staff was very attentive and with a personal touch. The cuisine both tradtional as expected but als very creative and with wonderful experience in flavor and presentation.
