“Jacob and Craig and a little bit of heaven on a plate”
Reviewed July 13, 2013

We eat in some very good and Michelin star restaurants but the food and service here at the garden room @ Stoke Place is great and on a par with several Michelin star restaurants. Also several surprise & unique mini pre courses are served during the meal. The head chef Craig is very talented, passionate and always open to constructive criticism. As the operations manager, Jacob ensures an exceptional level of service and has superb attention to detail. The venue and grounds are beautiful too.

Regards.

Went here for afternoon with the girlfriend. The finger sandwiches were excellent, great tea and on the whole excellent cakes. (Chocolate Swiss roll was a little dry). The scones were amazing too. Only downside was the gardener only seemed to want to mow the lawn when we were there. As soon as we were finished he stopped which was frustrating as we were sat outside and it was very noisy and it aggravated my hay fever. We didn't let that ruin our time and we enjoyed the beautiful grounds after the tea.

The surroundings are wonderful and make this place a wonderful place to visit. However, the rooms (Garden room 47) are tiny and the shower was in a wet area that didn't drain quickly enough and practically flooded the entire room. The TV didn't work - though they did fix this.

We attended a wedding and even though they served a cold starter, the main course followed one hour after and even after speaking top the chap in charge he said they were running late due to speeches - this was utter nonsense. The bar ran out of many of the drinks and check out/in was absolute chaos with very few staff front of house and unable to deal with basic requests. On the day following the wedding there was no beer and getting even a coffee took about 30 mins.

The public areas are very nice, but given the high costs of the hotel you expect a much better service and this was not forthcoming.

Let's start with the positive:
The restaurant is fantastic. The food is special, the service is excellent and it is very good value for money. They recommended us a fantastic wine which was at £4.50 for a glass a great treat.

The cake we had in the afternoon and the breakfast were great as well.

The public areas of the hotel are very well presented. The hammocks are a great idea.

The negative;
We had told the hotel in advance that we got married the weekend before and that we booked this as a minimoon for us. We did not want any freebies, but hoped that they make sure everything runs smooth. Well, you can always hope....

Our package included a suite, but when we arrived the air conditioning was not working. When we informed they admitted they have problems with it and offered us more fans (why did they put us in the room then on the hottest day of the year?). As my husband can not handle heat well we asked for a different room and accepted that it would not be the booked suite, but just a standard room. We only realised too late that the room did not have a proper shower. Instead they have only a bath tub. My husband could not stand in it (and he is not tall) and the pump did not seem to work properly which meant very low pressure and the temperature changing every few seconds. You are clearly not meant to use it as a shower as there is no shower curtain or anything like it and even when you shower while sitting in the tub the whole bathroom is wet afterwards.

As an 'apology' they offered us a bottle of champagne and when we said that we do not need the champagne, but prefer a coffee/cappuccino instead they admitted that the champagne was actually part of the package we had booked. We did not get a free coffee.

At check out we mentioned that we were not too happy. They offered us to take off the service charge from the hotel bill. The service charge was from our dinner and no way we would want to take this away from the restaurant where the service actually had been great.

In short, there is no chance we stay at this hotel again, but we certainly come back for the restaurant.

The outside of the building and the grounds are lovely. It helped that it was a sunny day!
Reception was well staffed and friendly.
I had a "chalet room" in the grounds, which was a decent size, with a flat screen, Ipod dock and snazzy aircon, disguised as a picture. Bed was comfortable and (normally one of my pet hates) pillows for once were perfect.
Bathroom was of the wet variety, with good powerful shower and nice soapy stuff (Occitaine).
As for food, only had breakfast, which was fine, whilst not outstanding. Only spoiled by two loud Americans who apparently had lost their volume controls (not the hotel's fault, however noise does travel in the dining area).
Efficient check out completed what was a good stay. I paid £109 B&B, which made this a good stay.

We enjoyed an afternoon tea with champagne in this lovely quiet location. The staff were very attentive and the selection of sandwiches and cakes were delicious. The glass of champagne and the endless pots of tea were very welcome. After the tea we enjoyed a stroll around the grounds which was wonderful.

Seemed there was almost one member of staff to each guest...a bit too much. Restaurant not at all intimate and you could hear every other tables conversation. Poor shower. Fridge not refilled. Room size good but seemed lacking in space due to poor design. Issue with the wine glass sizes. This hotel is good but not entirely comfortable.
