“A lovely hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2013 via mobile

We got a room through Secret Escapes and as it was our anniversary we were upgraded. The staff were very helpful on reception, particularly Chloe. As we got back to our room from dinner they had scattered rose petals all over the bed! A lovely big bedroom, comfy bed and very quiet location.

Would recommend this hotel.

This was a big disappointment. We were in one of the cottages 150 yds from the main building not ideal if the weather's cold or wet. You need 'sensible' shoes to walk over the gravel paths and a coat to shield you from the winter weather on your way to dinner. We had booked dinner for 7pm but this was changed, without consulting us, to 6.30pm. Dinner was good and the sevice 'speedy', all became clear when we were asked to leave the dining room soon after we finished. We were told that they needed the space for other bookings. Money before the convenience of guests obviously. Our room had coffee/tea marks on the wall, there weren't enough towels and if you didn't want to sit on the bed there was only one chair at the 'desk'. All in all, not what I would call a 4 star experience. Wouldn't go there again.

Room Tip: Stay in the main building to avoid having to take a coat when you go to dinner.

Visited on a dinner, b&b offer with complimentary champagne. The 'executive' room was clean and pleasant but much smaller than expected, probably only a standard in retrospect. Dinner had been booked beforehand but they brought forward the timing after our arrival that evening. Though no mention was made to us it quickly became apparent that they would need the table again as the service was express; we were duly ushered out immediatedly on finishing dessert. 3 course meal with wine all over in 65 minutes. The food was well presented and tasty, but very small portions. I asked for an additional side dish of vegetables but was refused.
The staff here were smartly turned out and courteous but all young. I think it was this inexperience that let a potentially good hotel down.

We took advantage of a Travelzoo offer of £169 for dinner bed & breakfast in one of their executive rooms. When we arrived we were greeted and made to feel welcome and told that we had been upgraded to one of their "gorgeous cottages" We walked back up the drive to the front gate where the cottages were and shown to our room, it was right by the road and seemed quite dark so we declined and asked for a room in the main house. We were then shown to our room the Linten which was a little small but quite nice overlooking the front of the hotel (we had been assured a view of the lake at the back when we booked) We went to the Garden room for dinner and it was delicious. Well presented and very tasty. The staff try very hard to please and in the main they do but it is quite obvious that they were learning their trade. Would we go back? Probably not, although overall we enjoyed our stay with them there was nothing special to make us rush back...

Last minute booking via Secret Escapes and it was fabulous. We stayed in Cheltenham suite which was gorgeous. Dinner in the restaurant was amazing with dietary requirements catered for. We can't wait to return!

Went along here at fairly short notice to celebrate my wife's birthday with an afternoon tea. Having considered some of the more popular riverside venues we opted for somewhere we hadn't been before. Booking on line was very straightforward.

Food was as expected, very nicely served by waitress and 'assistant' which made it very slick and professional. Sandwiches, warm scones and selection of 5 cakes/deserts together with a very wide choice of leaf teas were served in the garden room.

The only criticism is that the ambiance was a bit lacking, probably not unreasonably on a Tuesday afternoon at 3.00, there was another table occupied when we arrived which departed shortly afterwards (hopefully not as a result of our arrival).

12.5% optional service charge automatically added to bill, which always grates a little with me.

Would visit again, but probably in the summer when the grounds and terrace could be used to advantage.

We too had this as a Travelzoo offer gifted to us at Christmas. We booked it for a Valentines weekend treat.

Upon arrival we got in to the Reception area only to find nobody there to greet us. After hanging around for a few minutes somebody came through the door carrying other arriving guests bags. It was quite clear we were waiting and we were ignored whilst the other couple were checked in and assisted with their luggage. This felt a little bit like we were ignored as we were the "young couple". After being asked "if we were being seen to" we were then checked in by a lovely girl who was very apologetic for the confused and she showed us to our room. We were also in one of the outbuilding "cottages". It was a nice room with a nice bath tub and bathroom and comfy bed - all in all very impressive. The shower did leak a bit and the tiled bathroom floor was freezing!

We went over to the main building for drinks and dinner and found the bar staff seemed very stressed in the bar area. We think they may have been short staffed due to a wedding going on in the hotel, which we were concerned about but it didn't affect our stay at all.

The meal itself was of a very high standard, with lots of extra courses and some weird and wonderful additions, but I would tend to agree with other reviews - TINY PORTIONS!! Luckily we had some hula hoops which we scoffed when we went back to the room!

We opted to have breakfast delivered in the morning. This was lovely although we were given a selection of jams and marmalade but no toast!!

All in all we had a lovely night away, we also visited Windsor which was only a 20 minute drive and well worth a stroll around.
