Description: An award winning dining destination in the centre of beautiful old Amersham, the Artichoke restaurant has been tipped for the top by critics, chefs (including Raymond Blanc) and, rather impressively, the Michelin Guide 2011. The traditional setting of Artichoke has been given new life with a slick contemporary country makeover in which comfort and style sit side by side, colours are muted and soothing and the beautiful features of the building are allowed to shine through, a part of the carefully considered dcor. Chef and owner Laurie Gear oversees a refined modern European menu filled with charming additions including not only seasonal ingredients but foraged herbs, berries and flowers too and he and his team can be spotted hard at work in the open kitchen from the Kitchen Dining Room. Other spaces here at Artichoke include the glorious Garden Dining Room, opening out on to the bespoke herb wall and the Wine Room up on the first floor, leading in to the well stocked cellar and just right for sophisticated business dining. The perfect neighbourhood restaurant, Artichoke has certainly put Amersham on the map.

This isnt somewhere you would come regularly, it is definitely to save for special occassions. However, when you do go you WILL enjoy. The food is absolutely top drawer and the service was friendly and not at all over bearing. Overall this place hits exactly the right note.

“Superb Food Excellent Atmosphere”
Reviewed January 31, 2013 via mobile

We ate here on a weekday evening the resturant was fairly quiet but although a cosey room each table is nicely spaced giving you privacy. We were in the kitchen room (real name unknown) but basically there's an opening into the kitchen so you can see your meal being prepared that was very intresting. The food is very reasonably priced for the quality, and some dishes were very interesting in design and make up like the carrot cake, and eel and frois gois. We ate from the al a carte not being sure if we would like all the dishes from the tasting menu however wished we had tried the tasting menu as they were all so good. The portion sizes were good and we didn't go away hungry after 3 courses. Also although very young our waiter was very good and the whole waiting team made you feel welcome.

When you set your stall out as the Artichoke does it is extremely easy to fail. Guests analyse every element of their meal and dining experience with many wanting to find fault. We arrived with happy hearts following a last minute decision. La Gavroche weren't answering their phone, neither the Terrace Restaurant at Clivedon nor Collette's at the Grove had a table until 9.00 pm so we found ourselves walking into the Artichoke at 7.30.

A warm greeting awaited us, we settled down and decided on the tasting menu without the wine flight. A place like The Artichoke does require a bit of help from diners. The service is extremely slick, which some might take as aloof or cold but they are anything but. It was easy to enter into conversation and raise a smile. Yes, the French staff had a bit of an accent, they're French, but use their country of birth to your advantage. The sommelier for instance was a wealth of information. A nice touch - before the duck arrived he asked whether we would like a glass of red wine to compliment the Chablis. A fine choice it was too.

So what about the food? A wonderful journey through taste and texture. Unlike many tasting menus nothing was too loud or heavy. There were a couple of highlights but that's for you to discover. One dish I would mention was the amuse-bouche of beetroot soup with horseradish. I like neither ingredients but adored it !

We came away at the end of the night well fed but not overloaded with rich food. Each element of the meal had been handled to perfection by the kitchen with timings that only people on top of their game can manage, the service had been relaxed and welcoming and we will be going back.

As with all my reviews these days I don't discus price. The restaurant advertises their prices on the website and different people have different views on what constitutes good value. This is a restaurant which for some will be a special occasion treat, for others a regular venue.

Give it a try.

“TRULY GOURMET EXPERIENCE”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

We visited the Artichoke restaurant in Amersham for lunch on a cold January day. We decided to try the tasting menu. What a gourmet experience. Starting with the wonderful beetroot soup, each dish was of a really high standard. One of us requested the pork rather than the beef, and this was substituted without any problem.

It really is in our opinion the best restaurant for miles around and we are very fortunate that it is almost local for us.
