As a person who stays away 3 days a week I long for accommodation with character style and service
Bingo
The crown has managed the rare feat of being subtly stylish in a building of history and character
The team are polite and prompt
The rooms offer comfort with some great touches
I will be back !

The Crown Inn has oodles of character, fabulous decor and lovely additional touches. We booked it for a getaway that wasn't too far from London and where we could bring our dog. The pub/hotel is properly olde/worlde replete with creaky floors and lots of character. The design is very Soho House and it fits perfectly with the original features.
Things we loved: sitting by the fireside filled with candles for a cosy lunch, the fabulous furniture and decor, Amersham village itself is wonderfully friendly, our beautiful room with a Roberts radio, fabulous egyptian cotton bedding and lots of treats (wine, roasted nuts and retro sweets in a welcome basket), sitting in the beautiful old court yard with a glass of wine imagining the old horse drawn carraiges pulling up.
Things we didn't love: our room was very close to the stairs and the entrance hall and because the building is so old, the accoustics are not great. There was a wedding there when we stayed and we could hear lots of the celebrations from downstairs and then late at night/early in the morning we heard people creaking past on the way to bed or the cleaners arriving early in the morning. However, when we mentioned this to the management they were lovely about it and upgraded us to a suite for our second night. Very nice of them to do that. The suite was STUNNING.
We would definitely return.

Thank you for your review and I am glad that in general you like the Crown. I take your point on the acoustics - always an issue with old buildings. I am also happy you enjoyed the Courtyard room - we think they are quite special.

We recently gave a luncheon party for 37 guests in the beautiful dining hall. The food was excellent & exactly what we requested. We started with delicious canapes, followed by a traditional Sunday lunch. All the guests commented on how much they enjoyed the day.

The staff were delightful & gave their full attention to all our guests. The general manager Peter St.Lawrence listened & responded to all our requests and made it a perfect day.

We have just celebrated our Wedding at The Crown. We really cannot rate this hotel highly enough. The "back room" was the perfect setting for our small, intimate gathering of 17. The Hotel itself is beautiful and quaint with fantastic photo shots in every nook and cranny.
The food was a gastronomic delight and catered for all tastes even vegan.
Our room with it's high beamed ceilings, huge four poster bed, beautiful bathroom and roll top bath - absolutely amazing.

The whole day was overseen by the manager Peter Lawrence, who ensured that everything ran smoothly and all our requirements were met and exceeded. The staff were amazing, helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

Breakfast was again exceptional.

Thank you for a perfect day

Bren & Steve

We stayed here because we were going to see the NFL at Wembley but wanted to avoid crowds and make the most of the beautiful autumn we're having.

The room (101) is gorgeous! Very spacious with a massive bed, beautiful bathroom and the most AMAZING speaker ever!! (From Geneva Sound Systems, ideal if you just want to laze in your room and read with ambient music.. I could go on about this but I won't, but it is the best HIFI iPod speaker my wife and I have ever heard!) ;)

The toiletries are from the White Company and smell beautiful.

The location of the hotel allowed us to go for a walk in the village of Amersham with all of it's shops and the park around the church and along the river. So it really is a great place to relax and we almost resented having to to to London, which is actually very near thanks to the Metropolitan line.

The only let down was breakfast. We were pleased when the waitress recognised us from June, a lovely touch which made us feel more at home, but in the weekend, they have the heated tray buffet breakfast and the eggs had hardened from sitting in their tray and the mushrooms had definitely died..

The next day (weekday), the breakfast was to order which I prefer and thought Ah! This will be more like I remember the place to be! But again, the eggs were over cooked. i do think they use quality ingredients though as the sausages were very meaty, etc..

BUT, we stay for the room and not for the breakfast and as we said, we use this as a base for going to London or simply relaxing in the gorgeous room so overall, we think it's a fantastic hotel and will be going back again in the new year!

We chose this hotel as it is a short drive from the centre of London, and so makes a good weekend get-a-way. Old Amersham is pretty, with a small Saturday Farmer's market and little shops.. good for a short afternoon browse. There are plenty of pubs and eateries to cater for all tastes.

The Crown Inn is itself a good looking hotel, which was an old coaching inn, and prides itself as a boutique hotel. It also allows dogs. We booked through the hotel website to ensure the type of room (and one hopes that this would be the best available.. not sure in this case, and on arrival the front desk lady said she wanted to take payment again, until I pointed out we had paid in advance of our stay; I assume she was mistaken and just wanted our cc details).

The room was clean and reasonably spacious, the bed was comfortable and there was complimentary water and tea, and White Company toiletries. Dinner was excellent, with perfectly cooked scallops, good lamb and belly pork, and interestingly laid out desserts. Our waiter was fantastic- friendly and attentive without being overly intrusive, and is the saviour of this review.

What is, however, a complete let down is the front desk. For a 'boutique' hotel, this should be the 'selling' point and the aspect which should set it apart from other places. We found this front desk and the 'manager' (we assume since he was the manager as he was the only one to wear a suit, shirt and cufflinks) extremely poor. We asked for a GP service or nearest hospital- neither the manager nor the front desk lady could answer this rather basic question (surely this is not an uncommon enquiry) and in fact continued to discuss this between themselves, with no eye-contact or interaction, and proceeded to google the information, still without letting us know what they were doing; so we stood there rather awkwardly until they eventually came up with some information (in the end we drove back to London).

Overall, a lovely place near to London. Can't recommend due to the rather poor front desk service, and would suggest that basic medical information should be to hand.

Thank you for your detailed and generally positive review. I am of course disappointed in the performance of the front desk team, in particular that a senior member of staff did not engage with you well. I will be review this with him today.

Sunday afternoon tea is a great British Tradition and we were pleased to see that the Crown offer a filling and well presented Tea that gave us variety and was good value for money despite the price of £18. We had 4 different types of sandwich, 2 warm scones with jam & cream and 3 different types of cake (and that was for 2!) The tea came in 2 teapots and was made with tea leaves.

Service was friendly and attentive. Overall a great experience.

The Crown in Old Amersham, situated at the end of the Metropolitan Line and 40 minutes from London, is the second in a family of modern day coaching inns recently renovated by the designer Ilse Crawford (other works include Babington House). The old timber building is situated in the centre of the historic market town, attracting locals, restaurant guests and night time travelers. The inn’s interior is made up of rural materials – from Ercol chairs made in High Wycombe to traditional plaster made from lime and horsehair. The ‘back room’ with its inglenook fire and view of the cobbled courtyard is perfect for private gatherings and feasting of up to 40, while the bar and restaurant area is the communal heartbeat of the inn. The kitchen serves seasonally inspired, locally sourced food with in-between times satisfied with home baked cheese scones and fruit cake with Cashel Blue while the main menus changes daily. ... more   less
