“Contractors Digs !”
Reviewed February 4, 2011

I stayed here a few years ago and remember it as an ok place to stay, but how the years have not been good to it. Plenty of parking and a friendly receptionist, but the rooms, as another reviewer said, the window was wide open upon arriva,l the roomsmall& tatty, bathroom in need of a refurb and the TV at least 15 years old and capable of working on 3.5 channels only. The beds were very comfy though .The connected pub was busy on the 3 nights i stayed and each night by7.30 the carvery looked dried out and inedible, the meals we chose off the menu were good and a decent portion, but the main gripe about the pub were the loud and lively locals who were at times almost out of control and intimidating, with the bar staff doing nothing to calm them down. The main thing i would say aout this place is that it is a good contractors digs but not somewhere to take the wife!

Firstly, if your planning to take a cat to swing in your room, don't , you won't have space. Arrived in room to find window open, ok in summer but in October rain, not good, curtains, carpet all wet, room cold. The 4 channels on TV and the retro bathroom took me right back to the 70s. At £65 a night don't bother.

First impression of the "pub" was very good with plenty of adjacent car parking space. Rooms were in a separate annexe block behind the pub, but from the outside it all looked welcoming. No problem with check-in (service with a friendly smile) and our room was clean, (crisp white bed linen, large fluffy towels) although a little on the small side with dated, well-worn, old-fashioned furniture. Also, there was no hairdryer in room (although website stated there would be one) and our curtain rail was actually hanging off its hinge (reported this on arrival, but not repaired by the time we left two days later). Bathroom also had a distinct smell of paint so assume the rooms are undergoing some sort of renovation? TV had no remote (although picture quality for the only four channels was awful) but not a problem for us as we do not watch TV whilst away anyway.
On the plus side, the staff were particularly friendly and there was a good 'pub' atmosphere (only a dozen or so people on both Saturday and Sunday nights, so it was never noisy despite football being shown on a big screen). The food, at breakfast, in the bar and also the carvery, was excellent. To sum up, with further renovations to the rooms and parts of the bar (the sofas really smelt musty), the "Highwayman" could promote itself as an 'upmarket' inn yet still retain its distinctive features which sets it apart from say, a Travelodge or Premier Inn. Despite this negativity, however, we still had an enjoyable two night break and would have no hesitation in staying here again if visiting the area. Don't expect a modern, bright "motel" but an oldie-style friendly pub (reminiscent of the 1960's/70's) and you too will not be disappointed.

Where do we start... Reception not manned, have to check in at the bar. Ground floor room booked and first floor room allocated. Tiny room and filthy. Dirty grubby grey net curtains with lots of cigarette burns. Very dirty and old bathroom that had a lick of paint to try and tart it up, it didnt work paint splodges everywhere only highlighted the problems.
When I complained I was moved to the feature room" at no extra charge". Wjile this was better it as only just acceptable for a supposed 3star hotel. Certainly not worth the 49gbp that we paid. Have taken it up with the head office so watch this space.

Just returned from a two night stay booked at daily mail offer price only worth that the hotel was very dated our room was old small and tatty windows had black mould on frame TV remote did not work grout around bathroom tiles brown, no one there to check you out waited over ten minutes then gave up and left. the plus side food very good and service in pub/restaurant good would have complained to management if paid full price but you really do get what you pay for it seems have stayed at many old English inns and there were far better needless to say wont be returning to this one.

Stayed one night on a ground floor single room.

Although the room was showing signs of wear, it was clean and tidy. The staff were very polite and friendly and the portions served when I ate, were generous. One night's accommodation cost under £30 for me with breakfast included.

Tip - two evening meal main courses can be had for less than £10 on their current promotion
