“Don't have the steak!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Four of us stayed for one night in this pub with rooms. The bedrooms were small but clean without any frills, toiletries were not provided.

We ate in the pub in the evening, the menu, being a Hungry Horse pub was mostly 'chips with everything'. We ordered a starter to share between the 4 of us, fish & chips, lamb shank & 2 steaks to be cooked medium rare. The starter came at the same time as the fish & chips main course, which we had to send back. We hadn't finished our started when all the main courses were brought in, so a bit rushed.

I had the lamb shank which was nice & not too big. The medium rare steaks were unfortunately extremely overcooked, actually black in some places. The waiter apologised & said that new ones would be cooked. After 20 minutes, we were told that the steak would be ready in another 3 minutes, but they didn't arrive for another 20 minutes. Forty minutes to cook a steak? It seems a bit extreme.

The new steaks weren't burnt but were tough & inedible. When the waiter asked if they were OK, we told him that they were very tough & couldn't be eaten. He apologised again, but didn't offer to take the steaks off our bill. It meant that our companions had chips & a mushroom to eat, not a good dining experience! With the delay it also meant that we didn't eat together, which did spoil our evening.

All in all, fine if you want a cheap room for the night, but not somewhere you'd go for a nice meal - unless you have the lamb shank & no starter!

If you want luxury. This is not the place to stay! However, if you want a place to stay for a night or two on a budget, this may just tick your boxes. We booked a double room but ended up in the Dick Turpin Suite. If this was a suite then I'd hate to see a standard double! The "suite" was smaller than most premier inn standard rooms. It was though, clean and a king size bed was also welcome plus the 32" tv. Decent pub grub in the adjoining pub too. Couldn't get the shower to give out any hot water but the bath was ok. You get what you pay for, and for me in this case was happy with that.

Very handy for Luton airport
rooms small but adequate- needs soem tending loving care
Always have to wait at reception for someone to come over from the bar
Never eaten here- but the HH chain is usually quite good

I would not like to pay the asking price but for what I pay it is always clean and warm - just what I need - I usually pay between £20 and £35 per night, great value for that, bed is good

Good place to stay as on business, couples looking for more than just a room
would probably not like it

This was a last minute emergency trip to see a loved one in the local hospital. For the price you get a pub that serves good beer and value for money food. The check in was straight forward, the room had to be the furthest away but was fine. It was clean, simple and the bed was great. Just what we needed.

Would bear this in mind if we have to make another mad dash to Luton.

Booked a room for 2 nights, (Friday & Saturday Night) £40 for the 2 nights,
the room was clean and tidy,
with a TV, coffee and tea making facilties
the decor is a bit dated, but what do you expect for £20 a night
I found the bed was very comfortable
the shower tray did get a bit flooded when having a shower, but it was hot and powerfull
The Highwayman hotel is attached to a Hungry horse pub
if you want a cheap no frills hotel the highwayman is ideal and i would stay here again

We booked a weekend stay at the Highwayman , 2 nights for £50.... a bargain !
Upon arriving at the hotel we were given keys to our room and were not told of any check out times or anything really ,the corridor to our room was in poor condition with wall paper coming off the walls and a mouldy smell ....not very inviting ....our room was very poorly furnished and there were half used shower gels in the shower ( obviously an oversight by housekeeping ) but seemed clean ! The only saving grace was the bed which was white linen and upon peeling the sheets back it was spotless and very comfortable so we could ignore the poor decor.
The housekeeper the following morning was very polite and supplied us with plenty of extra coffee and milk which is nice .
The morning of departure at approximately 11:15am we had two managers banging on the door telling us very sarcastically we should have checked ou at 10.00am so i explained we were packed and on arrival no one had said so we presumed like most places it would be 12.00am ....their attitudes did stink a little upon departure but we were glad to leave anyway !
All in all if we had paid more we would have been dissapointed but as it was we just wanted a bed to lay our heads in and cheap and that is what we got .
If your bothered about service and a nice stay book elsewhere this is a very low budget Hotel .
All in a an OK stay .

sorry to say but the Highwayman is not what it used to be. I accept that it was cheap but only the same as Premier Inn or Holiday Inn. The building is tired with areas of wall paper pealing from the wall signs of mold around the windows, bath rubber, bathroom cieling and the box in of the extractor system. The pipe in the corner of the room that errupted into song at 5am was the final straw. When I raised these issues it was treated with the response I was expecting upon which my suggestion that the scrap of paper it was written on would go to no one and just find its way to the bottom of the bin and never be dealt with received an appropriate response and as I looked over my shoulder I saw the paper finish the final part of its' ark into the bin. A cheap hotel with an ok ish breakfast frequented by sales guys trying to prove they are the next big thing and a quality of finish that leaves alot to be desired.
The only good feature was the staff in the serving at breakfast, however I would prefer staffing issues to be discussed out of ear shot of customers.
