Owner description: Soar above a breathtaking landscape, sculpted over time, decorated by nature and enjoyed by generations.Stand on top of Dunstable Downs for a view that will simply take your breath away. These Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are designated for the quality of their chalk grasslands. As well as two Scheduled Ancient Monuments (Five Knolls and Medieval Rabbit Warrens) there are many other historical features and the site has much to offer you.The chalk grasslands of the Downs have miles of footpaths and several circular walks, a fascinating history and an abundance of plants and wildlife.Dunstable Downs is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the highest point in Bedfordshire. The wind-swept ridge provides ideal conditions for a variety of air sports, especially kite flying. On calmer days it's the ideal site to enjoy the view and a picnic. Please note: Chilterns Gateway Centre is owned by Central Bedfordshire Council and managed by the National Trust.

“Great view”

Amazing view, especially down onto the gliding club at the foot of the hill by the visitor centre. Nice staff at the cafe, lots of parking, great photo opportunities.

Really easy to park, lovely shop and nice to have a cafe. Walked for miles, could do with more guidance on walks or paths to follow to suit particular users

“Lovely views, great for dogs but the visitor centre is flawed”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

Based on a morning visit in June, although we've been loads of times

Good things

1. Beautiful views towards Leighton Buzzard and Ivinghoe Beacon, giving the lie to claims that there's nothing to see in Bedfordshire
2. Great for dogs to run around
3. There's a choice of places to park. Bison Hill, for example, is free and gives you a pleasant 20-minute or half-hour stroll to the visitor centre
4. It's connected with other historic places via the Icknield Way

Not-so-good things

1. The Downs themselves feel a bit manicured
2. The cafe is expensive and you always seem to have to wait a long time to be served
3. No free wifi, which surely isn't too much to expect these days

Thanks for the review, we're sorry we didn't quite live up to expectations on your last visit. We're working hard to make positive changes within the visitor centre including free public wi-fi which will be launching soon.
All the money raised through car parking charges directly contributes towards the upkeep of Dunstable Downs and the surrounding countryside and we aim to keep a good balance between the areas of grassland favoured by families, picnickers and kite flyers and the areas of wild chalk downland.
We hope that this information helps and that you have a more positive visit in the near future.
