Owner description: Soar above a breathtaking landscape, sculpted over time, decorated by nature and enjoyed by generations.Stand on top of Dunstable Downs for a view that will simply take your breath away. These Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are designated for the quality of their chalk grasslands. As well as two Scheduled Ancient Monuments (Five Knolls and Medieval Rabbit Warrens) there are many other historical features and the site has much to offer you.The chalk grasslands of the Downs have miles of footpaths and several circular walks, a fascinating history and an abundance of plants and wildlife.Dunstable Downs is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the highest point in Bedfordshire. The wind-swept ridge provides ideal conditions for a variety of air sports, especially kite flying. On calmer days it's the ideal site to enjoy the view and a picnic. Please note: Chilterns Gateway Centre is owned by Central Bedfordshire Council and managed by the National Trust.

“A good day out 27th May 2013”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

I first visited Dunstable Downs as a child in the sixties. Little has changed except for the new visitors centre and car park. Children and adults can still enjoy walking on the Downs, kite flying and watching the gliders as I did as a child. Yes you pay to park the car £2 all day and pay for food and drink but I would spect to pay for those items. Taking a picnic is a cheaper option. Overall a good, cheap day out.

“Great place to blow the cobwebs away!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

A fantastic place to spend a few hours or all day up overlooking the beautiful countryside and of course to have fun flying a kite!

Car park is large and free to National Trust Members - also excellent cafe and shop run by the National Trust too. Stocks varied types of kite prices reasonable and quality adequate.

From the visitor centre you can venture far into the surrounding areas of grassland and wander for miles.

The views are amazing and or a cheap family day out it is fantastic.

This is a staff member following up on requests:
Thanks to Rosemary for her positive comments recently. Linked to her request 'Only complaint it could remain open and serve snacks later in the day and access to toilets.', we have now extended the service hours. The toilets are open from 8.00am until 6,00pm every day. Food and drinks can be bought from the hatch from 8.00am, as we have many 'early birds' and dog walkers. Icecream, food and drinks are also available from the hatch until 6.00pm, although the main centre closes at 5.00pm (outside toilets available until 6.00pm).
