We had looked forward to this trip for months. Our family of four was celebrating our son's graduation. We arrived at a very run down and very lonely place. The pictures on the website are very misleading. The biggest disappoinment was the condition of the animals.( 60 deer in a small rocky area, 2 crocodiles which are fed " one chicken every 15 days" )
Other problems: public beach right next door - didn't feel safe
cenote is not swimmable
odor from the deer is intense

The room was nice but much smaller than it appears in the pictures. There is probably less than 2 feet on each side of the bed. We tried to make the most of it and went down to ride bikes to dinner. The bike seats were ripped up and the pedals were broken - basically junk. We walked to dinner, which was in the one restaurant available, and there was hardly anyone there. We waited an hour for a dinner that was not very good. By this time, my heart was broken and the tears were coming. My husband asked for us to be moved to another resort. We were moved to Adventura Cove for an extra $600.

My husband and I stayed for a week. Meals:You get to order from their VERY LIMITED ala carte menu for breakfast, lunch & dinner which gets OLD after the 1st order. When we asked about the daily buffet, the hostess said they don't have buffets unless they have a large amount of hotel guests, but they would be having one lunch buffet that Thursday since they were expecting visitors from a tour bus from another hotel! VERY LIMITED ENTERTAINMENT ACTIVITES: They had bingo one night and the other karaoke, but we only the same 4 guests the whole week. Thank goodness David told us to go to their sister hotel Aventura Palace (GREAT PLACE!) for nightly & daily entertainment activities! We had to pay for taxi roundtrip each time we went to Aventura. Bikes: I rode their bike to my hotel room and fell due to avoiding an uprooted tree trunk in the middle of my pathway! I fell onto the garden area and split open my palm because their garden border is made up of jagged edge river rocks! I ended up getting stiches the 2nd day we got their and getting the stiches WAS MORE PAINFUL than the fall!! THEFT:The 3rd day we went to Aventura to enjoy their facilites and the next morning we discovered that MY CELL PHONE & CHARGER WAS STOLEN! Hotel security said they would conduct staff interviews & they had to do a full room search for confirmation. NOT WORTH ONE PENNY!

As explained in other reviews, the majority of the property was severely damaged in a hurricane and has not yet been restored. A walk along the waterfront will reveal what a spectacular resort this must have been prior to the damage. But what remains useable is still beautiful. There were about 50 guests at the hotel during our stay, and at most we bumped into 6 other guests per day (usually at the restaurant or swimming pool). The pool is huge (especially when you share it with only 6 people). Service is a little slow in general, and food is good though not spectacular (the fish was always better than the beef, but shellfish was mostly disappointing). The promotional credits were well applied to tours (Tulum and Chichen Itza) and spa treatments, and champagne. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, and we found exactly what we were looking for.... a low key, laid back, resort. We took advantage of other palace resorts nearby (Playacar, Cozumel and Aventura) and they were indistinct properties that could have been anywhere. Xpu-ha's setting, with it's aviary and variety of animals in and out of cages, was unique and the perfect get-away. Be sure to take the eco-tour with Gabriel, and meet some of the local wildlife up close.

Room Tip: Upper units have a vaulted thatch roof - cost more

My husband and I stayed at this resort 10 years ago and loved it so much decided for our 20 anniversary to go back again. Unfortunately, the resort is less than half of what it was before; more than 500 units, a beautiful beach, lagoon and 5 wonderful restaurants. Upon arriving we went straight to the "beach" to realize there is no beach! There is sand and water but it is so rocky you can't get in. There is a lovely pool, which we used for several days. There is only 1 restaurant, which offers Italian and Mexican and that got old real fast. The breakfast and lunch menus were okay, but based on what I paid for an all inclusive fee, I expected a whole lot more. We were offered transportation to a neighboring resort, which we took advantage of, but if we wanted to stay for dinner at the resort, we had to pay for a taxi to take us back. The bugs were out big time and we should have brought bug spray with us this time, but with the assistance of Gabriel, we were able to use some of his herbal medicines to help with that. On the positive, the service was wonderful and the staff at the restaurant and on the grounds could not have been nicer. They took the time to show us all the animals and we got the full history of the destruction that the hurricane caused 5 years ago. The fitness center was outdoors and when it is 90 degrees, no one wants to work out in that heat! There is currently a title dispute on the remaining damanged property and if Palace Resorts cannot get it figures out, they are going to lose more and more customers.

If you want glitz and glamor and ostentatious, this is not your place. We came from the airport with 6 other people staying in the resort next to ours, which looked like a place on the Vegas strip. The Xpu-Ha was nothing of the sort. My wife and I stayed here for our 15 year anniversary and were amazed at how wonderful the resort and staff were. You can go for a walk and not see anybody for 5 minutes. We went kayaking and saw a manatee. The staff, Miguel, Fernando, Elias and Izmael and everyone else, were very nice and attentive to anything we needed. The pool was amazing.

If you want to go to a place where there are 100 other people in the pool, then don't go here. At most, there were maybe 10 to 12 other people in a pool that was a block long. The food was fantastic (only two menu's though, mexican and italian), but everything we ordered was fantastic.

If you want a lot of action and night life, do not go here, there is not much to do in the evenings, even though they try to have night entertainment. There are not enough people staying in the resort. But if you like to relax and read a book and spend quality time with your spouse/significant other, it is perfect.

Our room was absolutely perfect, a two person hot tub, the bed was very comfortable, We stayed next to the bird atrium and it was nice to hear the wildlife.

We plan on going back as it is perfect for a week of peace and quiet. Every other couple we met (which were very few) loved the resort, as did we.
