We spent 3 nights at Casa Carolina this spring in March. The place was full but you would barely know it because everyone was super quiet and seemed to be on a different schedules. So when we enjoyed the beach out front everyone else was fishing or diving. Made for a very relaxing vacation as we felt like we had the place to ourselves. It is in a great location for the reef and snorkeling although we didn't get a chance to do it because of the winds. It is far enough from town to feel like you are away from everything but close enough so that you can pop in and get some groceries or have a nice dinner at the Leaky Palapa (a must do!). The lodging was immaculately clean and the perfect size for what you need when staying in Xcalak. It comes with nice amenities like a refrigerator, 2 burner stove and all the necessary dishes. We enjoyed hanging out during Happy Hour (5-7pm) with Bob and Caroline and any other guests that were there. Our only complaint would be that we wish it was a bit longer because we enjoyed the conversation so much. ;) But both nights we had dinner reservations at the Leaky Palapa so we had to leave. We will definitely be back!!

First of all, the owners of Casa Carolina are wonderful and really try to make sure you're experience is a good one. They helped arrange boat and snorkel tours for our group and Bob personally fits you for your snorkel equipment. The hotel rooms are beautiful, nice soft clean sheets and nicely decorated.
It's a bit of an adventure getting there on the narrow road through the jungle, but well worth it. This place is a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. Once you come back from your awesome snorkel tour, you can hang out on your hammock and just watch the waves, or sit on the roof for the best view in the hotel (great for star-gazing after dinner). If you like fresh coconut water, just ask one of the staff and they will grab one off the trees and open it for you!
My only regret? I was only there for 3 days! Next time it will have to be a week at least.

Room Tip: top floor rooms have the best view, but seem to get stronger wind

My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed 9 gloriously peaceful and adventurous days in Xcalak at Casa Carolina. Even though we live in Maui and appreciate what beauty surrounds us at home, we were charmed by the slow pace and peacefulness that we found in Xcalak. Having done my homework online before choosing a hotel and feeling confident that I had found the best, one can never be sure until one's arrival. I visited the other hotels after arriving, just to check them out. While they were nice, they were not Casa Carolina!! Not only are Bob and Caroline great hosts as well as their staff, the physical setting is so very special... open and expansive, white sand abounds, providing an unobstructed view of that fabulous Caribbean sea and serene long pier framed by a few palm trees. Being a 4 room hotel, Casa Carolina has a feeling of tranquility that I doubt we could have found elsewhere. We were able to relax... really relax. That was invaluable. Oh, and I must say that The Leaky Palapa Restaurant is a must; we went three nights. loved cooking in our kitchen for most of our other meals. My hat's off to Bob and Caroline for creating such a special place; we will return someday.

The last time I reviewed Casa Carolina was in 2005...I thought it was fantastic then, and after this trip, I still think so. So many places revisited just don't live up to their past, but Casa Carolina and Bob and Caroline, and dog Tootsie, are as wonderful as ever. The property is well maintained, the rooms are still well appointed, and the guests are always a delight to meet. I just stayed for the past 6 days, and met people from Norway and Belgium as well as from various states in the US. Bob and Caroline are terrific hosts, and the breakast time and evening cocktail time in the palapa are great social events. Caroline's morning muffins...different each day are excellent. A breakfast of the muffins, juice, different fresh fruits each day, hard boiled eggs, and seemingly bottomless pots of coffee is provided every morning. Snorkeling from the pier to a nearby coral head, I saw many tropical fish, and even saw a courting pair of Caribbean reef squid changing colors. There is a small turtle that seems to have taken up residence there. The diving was also excellent with views of rays, lobster, morays, and the largest crab I've seen in my life, along with the usual brightly colored tropical suspects. Xcalak is a quiet unspoiled refuge from the tourist destinations of the Riviera Maya...no time share salesmen, tacky tee shirt and curio stores, or huge all inclusive resorts. This will be my yearly winter trip!

We discovered Xcalak 10 years ago and always look forward to the next stay with Bob and Caroline. Always feels as if we're visiting old friends. Being from Alaska, we relish the peace, quiet and remote beauty of the area, in addition to the great fly-fishing. Also highly recommend at least one meal at The Leaky Palapa.

We spent 16 days at casa caolina and wish we were still there, The owners were wonderful the breakfasts were perfect and the other guests were charming and great to hang out with. We snorkeled fished(lots of bonefish and permit at low prices) and totally loved using the bikes. The produce trucks were awesome and the local stores were more than adequate for basics. We'll be back next year if we're lucky. While "its not for everyone-the towns motto" if you want to enjoy nature fishing and a very friendly safe area at a wonderful place GO!

Never before have we returned to a vacation spot, even though we have visited some fabulous places. But we see ourselves staying at Casa Carolina for years to come.  Our room had a wide view off the balcony.  Having access to the kayaks is so perfect, as we can get out to the reefs whenever we want.  We haven't stopped talking about all our sightings while snorkeling! Spotted eagle rays, dolphins, electric ray, turtles, a giant lobster, squid, and the moray eel were the new finds this time.  The bikes were great to explore and to grab lunch in the village. We enjoyed the company and laughs with Bob and Caroline and the other guests especially during happy hour and breakfast in the palapa. Our room and the grounds were cleaned and straightened every day - we appreciated all the help from Hortencia, Carlos, Jose, and Rosa. We also like having the kitchen if we want to eat in. We can't say enough about how comfortable we feel here.
