“Very pleasant stay with Caroline and Bob”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay at Casa Carolina. The rooms were very comfortable and clean. We stayed in the room on the second floor; the view of the beach, dock and the sea was always spectacular. Swimming was good, snorkeling excellent - you can access a few small reefs from the shore if you're a reasonable swimmer. We saw a lot of fish, moray eels, trunk fish and many other sea creatures I have no names for.
We only used the kayaks a couple of times and it was a lot of fun!
We took two boat trips to snorkel and to see manatees in the mangroves - we were lucky! We saw 3 manatees - what a great experience to see these magnificently quiet beings...
If you're NOT into busy resort with night life - this is a perfect place to spend quiet and active (or lazy) vacation.
Reading a book in the hammock on the balcony was one of the highlights for me.
Caroline and Bob were very helpful with their suggestions, recommendations and information.

Room Tip: I'd recommend the top floor rooms for the views and more privacy.

I suppose it didn’t hurt that the weather was absolutely perfect the whole time we were there, but from the moment I got my first sight of Casa Carolina until we left, I couldn’t have been happier. I felt privileged to be staying in such a beautiful room, with such an amazing view. I wish I could transplant the bathroom to my own house. You’ll see what I mean when you see it! The dock is a real plus. Sitting out at the end of the dock was like having our own private paradise. Boats picked us up for snorkel trips, we didn’t have to lift a finger. We saw magnificent coral on the snorkel trips, and the mangroves are incredibly beautiful. We did see lots of fish on the snorkel trips, but I have to say, we saw more right at the coral head that is front of Casa Carolina. In addition to all sorts of tropical fish, we saw the biggest moray eel I have ever seen, a very cute turtle (we’re told that both of those are permanent residents) and I even saw an octopus eating a conch! Bob and Caroline were great hosts. Really, it couldn’t have been better.

My wife and I are avid divers and fly fishers and we like to do both when we are on vacation and we like to do it in reasonable comfort. Casa Carolina exceeded all our requirements for an incredible vacation. We would do it again in a heart beat. And, I think we will, very soon.

My husband an I first visited Xcalak and Casa Carolina over 10 years ago. This was our 7th visit to the hotel, and though we stayed at the neighboring Reef House, which best accommodates our family of four, we spent the mornings and evenings with the owners of Casa Carolina and took advantage of their amenities and included breakfasts just as the Casa Carolina patrons do. Very little has changed even after so many years and what has, such as the now walled and screened in palapa area, has changed for the better. We felt at home as we always have and we are already planning our next visit filled with diving, snorkeling, saltwater fly fishing, and relaxing with friends. Please do yourself the favor of checking out this little-known gem of the southern Yucatan.

Living in Texas, vacations in Mexico are a natural thing for us,
because we can often get good air fares, especially to Cancun, and
the travel time is so short. We take a lot of opportunities to go
away for long weekends, and have been working our way down the coast
from Cancun. We kept hearing about Xcalak from other travelers, and
it sounded intriguing. When we were able to get flight times that
gave us enough time to spend two nights there, we decided to go for
it. It was a very pleasant drive down. Once you get past Tulum, there
isn't any traffic at all. You go through some towns that feel "real":
i.e., like they don't exist only because of tourist traffic, but
would be there anyway. Casa Carolina far exceeded our expectations.
Everything was SO BEAUTIFUL. I hadn't planned on using the
kitchenette in the room, but we felt like we didn't want to miss a
moment of enjoying the view from our room, and the room itself. We
were fortunate enough to be there on a day when one of the grocery
trucks came to Casa Carolina, and we just bought some things from the
truck, fixed some surprisingly delightful meals in our room (fresh
ingredients really do make a difference, I suppose!) and enjoyed our
surroundings. Breakfast in the palapa is included, and was a
pleasure. Our only regret is that we didn't have time to stay longer.

Room Tip: All rooms face the sea, We had a first floor room and it was great

Beautiful place to stay. Rooms are clean, decorated with Mexican tile, comfortable beds, very inviting with a great, no awesome view of the ocean. Perfect place to go for a quiet retreat. Snorkeling by the hotel is great and the owners are very nice and informative.

Room Tip: Sorry they have no pool, couldn't reclick it. The road there is paved and very safe. It is ver...

We stayed at Casa Carolina for 4 nights during a 3-week trip around Mexico. It was just what we needed after a hectic fortnight in cities and on buses. We felt extremely privileged to stay in such a beautiful and unspoiled spot. The rooms are comfortable, the fridge and cooking equipment welcome, and the private beach is literally a step away. Caroline's breakfast muffins and Bob's margaritas are excellent, and they both offer great advice on what to do and where to go. We kayaked, cycled, snorkled, swam and lazed around on the beach. If you want some time out, this is the place to go!
