“AWESOME! if your fishing or diving!”

David and Allana are great hosts. Allana who is from California supervises all the home cooked food. even the locals come to dine. Great soups, entrees, and the awesome coconut cream pie. There was a party of 8 of us. 6 Americans 2 Canadians fishing for 6 days. We were boating 30 bone fish a day, Tarpon and permit. We also caught snook, this is truly super grand slam territory. The town is very quiet, nothing opened after 9 pm. so you need to be active during the day. This is why it suits fisherman and divers who come off the water in the late afternoon, sip cocktails and appetizers on the deck by the ocean, before sitting down to a sumptuous 4 course evening meal!!

good guides showed us terrific fishing even with3 windy days; our group caught lots of bones,a few tarpon, snook and a good permit. Saw a lot of permit with good casting opportunities. Terrific food, drinks and service. I'll be back! .... from Maine

We booked this place on recommendation from friends so that my husband could try his hand at bonefishing. I was worried that I and our 3-year-old son would be bored for the 5 days and 6 nights we had planned. We all had a great time. Our cabana was perfect - clean, comfortable, with a really great shower. Only downside was when they ran the generator it felt like it was right out the window. Fortunately they always turned it off by 9 at night and did not have to use it every day. Best to ask for a cabana closer to the water's edge to dull this noise. The food at the restaurant was good - great breakfast, which was included. The lunches when we ate there were all good and dinners, while a little expensive, were also good. A bargain option was their homemade pizza which we enjoyed several nights.

In addition to the bonefishing we took advantage of the snorkeling and birdwatching trips offered by the lodge. The snorkeling was amazing and our guides helped us find and name the sea creatures that we encountered. I couldn't have been happier with our stay.

Xcalak is a small town with not much going on so if you want to shop take a day trip to Mahahual (a 45 minute drive) when the cruise ship is in town and enjoy a bustling tourist town with a nice swimming beach. Only downside to Costa de Cocos is that you really can't swim there as the water's edge is mucky, quick sand.

I have stayed at Costa de Cocos at least 25 times in the past 10 years. Why do I keep going back there? Because there is no place as beautiful and relaxing, fun and secure. In all my visits, I have NEVER encountered anyone who has experienced theft at this resort. The lovely rooms all have safes and keys, and like anywhere on vacation, I use both so as to avoid any problems. Costa de Cocos' owners make my husband and I feel like family, and I see the care and concern they have for keeping all their guests happy. The setting is spectacular, and the comfort and delightful feel of the place make it like none other. We have taken various friends and relatives there over the years and everyone has loved it and had a very special experience that cannot be topped. The snorkeling is the best ever, and I cannot count how many turtles I have had the opportunity to swim with. I love Costa de Costos and look forward to many more visits there.

Picture three travelers wanting a relaxing, adventurous, cultural, and beautiful vacation -- all living in areas stuck in gloomy spring weather. Now, picture those same three travelers after a week+ at Costa de Cocos. Completely relaxed, adventured, cultured, and beautified (tan counts, right?).

Yes, the drive is a bit long (5 hours) from Cancun. But, why not take a few days and stop at one of the glorious towns along the way? We opted to stay at Puerto Morales the first night and spent two nights in Tulum. Or, another group of people staying at the resort while we were there flew to Belize and arrived via a boat captained by the infamous Ramon. The third in our group took a more direct route and caught a bus (air conditioned) from Playa del Carmen to Mahaual. And, yes, the last 50km seem long, but it only makes the arrival at Costa de Cocos all that more amazing.

We arrived around 8PM on a Thursday evening and were blown away by the contrast of the jungle road and the delicious smelling food and laughter streaming out of the restaurant's wood-slated windows. We sat down to a dinner of fresh fish and homemade pasta, completed by an outstanding margarita! We went to sleep to the sound of the wind in the palm trees and the quiet that only Xclax can provide.

We spent the next week idyllically moving from the dock, where most of the sunbathing took place, to the water, where the glorious snorkeling was had, to the restaurant, where the food was ever-impressive and tasty.

We napped in the hammocks in the our clean, perfect cabana and in the one strung between two palm trees near the shore. We ate fish tacos each and every day for lunch -- which we miss each and every day we are back in our lives in Seattle and Oakland. We spent hours watching the sea life grow and change in the shallow waters under the dock.

The staff and owners at Costa de Cocos made this amazing vacation possible. We never felt safer, being three women, then we did at the resort and around the area. The cabanas were always clean, the water always warm, the beds were always comfy, the food was always delicious. We spent many hours talking and laughing with the people working and running Costa de Cocos, which made the trip all that more enjoyable.

Our final night of the trip was full of hugs, laughs, and good food. We were relaxed, well-fed, hammock-happy, and spanish-speaking guests. We marveled at our snorkeling adventures, our kayaking escapades, our fish taco feasts, our oohs and aahs at the amazing turquoise water of the lagoon that we visited on a day trip, and at the most glorious vacation we ever had.

We left feeling sad that we were returning home to work and life back in the city, but so excited to share the wonderful experience with our friends and families. Why did it take us three months to write the review for Costa de Cocos? We'll blame it on the mexico-ish sense of time that we took home with us!

Gracias, Costa de Cocos!

One of the most relaxing and rewarding vacations we have ever had. Smimming, snorkling, fishing, and hanging out.. Thankfully far from the maddening crowds of Cancun, great food, and the hosts and staff were gracious and committed to making this a wonderful vacation - we will definitely be back for more!

Because we had seen a previous review of THEFT at Costa de Cocos, we thought would be more careful. So we placed all of our cash in the room's lock box and attached the lock securely. The key was ALWAYS with my husband. Well, the night prior to departure, we check the lock box and find $300 missing!!!! This was NOT some misplaced money, this money was gone! Not all of the money was taken and the passports were not touched, but there was THEFT AGAIN at this hotel. Ilana (owner) and Jim (manager) claim only 1 other key exists with management, so, I ask you....who took our money??? There is definitely a problem at Costa de Cocos. Bring your own lock for the lock box or keep all your cash on you.

Otherwise, I did enjoy my stay. The staff was friendly, the cabana comfortable, the views gorgeous. The food could use some improvement. It is a shame that what I take from my stay is loss and suspicion.
