If you are looking for a great place off the grid, this is it. No cell, no tv, no noise! We went for a 7 day fishing trip and fell in love with the staff and laid back atmosphere. But be warned, this is not the Ritz and you are away from city life. Wind and solar power, showers are gravity based and hot water is a sometime thing. Having said that it is part of the charm. Casitas are basic but clean with a great bed and hammock.
The food is great and don't miss the home brewed beer. Fishing diving and snorkeling are special and with no crowds. The location is 4 1/2 hours from the Cancun airport. Most of it on paved roads that are in good shape. Alberto is the most patient and hard working guide.

We didn't stay here, only stopped for lunch since we were visiting Xcalak. Drove down for the day to escape the cruise ship crowds. The staff was very friendly and allowed us to have a look around. We both ordered the fish and chips. Hot, fresh and deep fried! The waiter said it was red snapper, and came as large nuggets. It was served with malt vinegar, or there was a spicy dipping sauce that was very good.My husband wanted to go back again the next day for more. The menu was in US dollars but they converted to pesos for us at a good rate. The facility looked nice, little individual Casitas. There was a windmill for power....a bit off the grid. Nice and quiet!

My daughter and I stayed here in Feb17. We have stayed in Cancun resorts, this is not that. This is just all the good and fun parts of the resorts, leaving out all the people and not fun parts.

Our room was enormous and super comfortable. The hotel restaurant was fantastic, a lot of choices, all that we tried were delicious. Home made beer, what could be better after a day in the water.

The water. Oh my. The hotel has a pile of kayaks for the taking. Paddle out a few hundred feet, tie off, jump in. Live coral, thousands of fish, perfect snorkelling.

We also did some scuba diving. We are not experienced divers, but Jasmine the scuba instructor took care of us and showed us an absolutely amazing time. Manatees! and fish, and ... amazing.

This is simple living of the most exquisite sort. I cannot wait to return.

The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. The rooms were nice, clean, great food in the restaurant and a very relaxing lodge. Fishing was tough due to the winds but still an outstanding vacation.

The good:
•The staff was pretty good. Not always consistent, but they were friendly and helpful.
•Some great wildlife right there at the resort
•The included breakfast was good as was the restaurant itself was good
•Taking a kayak out to the buoy, tying it to the buoy, and snorkeling was magnificent. Excellent snorkeling right out in front of the hotel, but you need the kayak. Because it’s a protected reserve, you need to buy a bracelet which runs about $3 USD/ea.
•The price was right

The bad:
•The beach is very small and, frankly, you aren’t going to walk out in to the water. Don’t expect some white sand beach where you can just walk in for a quick dip.
•Huge variance in quality from one room to the next. Cabana #7 was way, way better than Cabana #15
•The place could use some a facelift or some TLC. Repainting the restaurant deck/patio and the cabana interiors would do wonders. I understand the salty air is problematic, but new bathroom fixtures (taps, etc.) are needed as most are really corroded
•Caretaking of the grounds left something to be desired. We walked by the same huge, gross cigar butts in the sand, five feet from the restaurant for days. Nobody on staff took the initiative to just pick them up and dispose of them. It’s not a big property like some mega-resort so literally one person could spend an hour each day picking up litter and it would go a long way.
•A bit disorganized in terms of reservations, bills, etc.

A few suggestions to management:
•A single garbage receptacle anywhere on the grounds would be really helpful.
•Switch to using the local Xcalak bottled water to support the community/local economy, if you must use bottled water at all. Perhaps for the restaurant you could use a cooler and glasses instead of constantly handing out small, plastic bottles of water?

A warning to anyone going to Xcalak in general: Have a car before you get there! You can’t rent one there. There are NO taxis in town. Don’t count on someone just giving you a drive. Might happen, but if it doesn’t, you could risk missing your bus or flight

Room tip: Room 7 was good
