Located just to the left of the middle of no where is Xcalak.
The only way you're ever going to be there is if you make an effort to get way off the beaten path.

Since I seem to suffer from some affliction which drives me to do this, I end up at least yearly in xcalk.

These days the xcalakcaribe is reason enoigh to make the trip.
A Spanish chef cooking paella in an open tropical place without a tourist in sight is simply as good
as it gets.,,

Go, eat the paella. You'll love it.

So we arrive in Xcalak, dusty after the drive, and hungry after turning into the cruise ship dock rather than the town strip when we said, on the drive, "We're hungry, let's eat in Mahaul." The Caribe is open, looking deserted at 4 in the afternoon, but another family was just finishing up. We trooped up, ordered variously the shrimp (huge, whole, and delicious) the paella, fantastic, if a little salty, and washed down with cerveza in the afternoon sun, looking out onto the reef with a recently wrecked sailboat up from Guatamala, and discussing the whole situation with Freddie. Freddie sat with me for more discussion and a shot of good sippin' tequila, on the house, as I paid the bill. What a wonderful welcome home to Xcalak. Unfortunately, the Caribe was closed one of the other few afternoons in town when I wanted to drop in between the afternoon and night dive at XTC. Would have loved to have tried something else from them!

Freddie, the owner and chef, was charming and gracious. The food was fabulous! We heard about the paella from the local dive shop, so we stopped by and asked if he would have any that evening. No problem. When we arrived he had our table set and we sat and drank a beer while he prepared the paella. He brought out a frying pan with more paella than the two of us could ever eat and it was the best we've ever had. We took it to our hotel and had it for dinner the following nite. We went back for another meal - had octopus appetizer (excellent!) and the paella was EVEN BETTER that the first time.
Our only dissapointment was that he didn't have wrinkle potato and we didn't have more time to see what else he could whip up for us.
If you are going to be in Xcalak - and you really should consider visiting this charming, authentic fishing village - do yourself a favor and stop by Xcalak Caribe and treat yourself.

We ate twice at Xcalak Caribe in January 2013 and were delighted each time. Freddy from Spain and Belgium and his wife from Bolivia are amazing cooks (we first had squids and then paella) and they manage to give their food a taste of the best from everywhere. The place is very pleasant, overlooking the beach, it feels like time has stopped here. Freddy organized a snorkelling tour near the coral reef and it was amazing, we even brought our 2 year old and 6 month old and they also loved it. Greatly recommended!
