My girlfriend and I stayed five days in the upstairs level of Casa Caracola, with its spectacular views of the Carribean from the deck and the palapa-style dining room.
Thirty feet from the house across a well-kept lawn waits the beach, lounge chairs, and a palapita. The property sits on a great stretch of beach, and the snorkeling directly in front of the house was the best we experienced in the Xcalak area. In addition to endlessly colorful fish, we swam with a sea turtle, barracuda, rays, and even a nurse shark. Conch crawl the bottom and lobsters hides in the coral. Birds were constantly present, including terns, egrets, herons, and brown pelicans. Before sunset, not more than 40 yards away, we sipped cervezas while a Great Blue Heron grabbed and gulped an eel. Really quite incredible.
The owners, Gisele and Philippe, are wonderful people. They took us snorkeling, answered all of our questions about the area, and bent over backwards to ensure that we had everything we needed and were enjoying our stay. On-site caretakers, Gabriel and Martha, keep the the property immaculate. The bed was very comfortable and the home had all the amenities we wanted, from bottled drinking water to bikes and a variety of snorkel gear. An all-around pleasure. We highly recommend Casa Caracola.
